PHATBOi's First Box Build

Recommended Posts

$650 Ballin On A Budget Build. Had to add $50 for the two sheets of cabinet ply I'ma pick up at HD hopefully this weekend. Everything else was traded straight up for what I already had. That means it's officially build log time.

Pics of gear:

RD Alpha/PSI Hybrid 15D2. Hit the motor and basket with my rim cleaner.

My first official box design.

RDBox-2.png

Thanks to BYC for teh sketchup. When I build, 45's will be 2x2's ripped down the middle on a 45 and a 2x2 frame inside the box will give me something to screw the panels to.

Sub/port forward into cabin, sealed off from trunk in this area.

100_5067.jpg

That's about does it for now. Should be gettin wood this weekend, but might be next.

Goals are obviously teh lows. But, I have been doin 12's in the trunk lately and while they kill the lows, it's just not enough output for me. So, I got a bigger sub, bigger amp, and I'm sealing off the trunk. Think it will work?

Current setup:

Skar VVX-12D2 in a BHE 2.0^3 @ 30Hz Box. (Pending payment)

on the RUB1.2500D at 1 ohm.

100_5168.jpg

Sounds really good. Rubicon is definitely cleaner than the American Bass. Have the gain almost 1/2 on the Skar at vol 52/62 and it is takin it better than it did the VFL100.1 I traded for the 15 imo.

Had to move the box farther back in the trunk than I had originally planned because I did not give myself enough clearence under the rear deck lip to get the top on. Ended up just installing the front panel and building the box from it. But, forgot to cut the hole out untill it was already glued and screwed. :banghead3: So, I cut it in the car and cut it to big. :rolleyes2: So, if anyone asks, it was meant to be double baffle the whole time, lol. Also as you can see, I forgot to leave a gap in the front 2x2 for the sub. That was a fun fix and most likely the reason the hole ended up to big...

you should throw in a fuse between your amp and battery, could lead to horrible things.

Yeah, got the fuse and holder when I got the wire but got home and ended up with a 4 gauge direct connect fuse holder lol. Goin back today to swap it out and 250 amp fuse will be added. Thanks.

I wouldn't fuse that. Run is so short nothing it can catch on really.

Not takin any chances with my 2500 watt baby.

David from PSI:

The motors are really the same on the Alpha and Alpha Maxx.

They have a small gap' date=' and we only use 4 layer FW voice coils in them.

Should be a dual spider setup also.[/quote']

Yep' date=' stiff spiders.

It will handle 1200-1500w rms (maybe a little more but Im not guaranteeing it) depending on the install.[/quote']

My response:

Cool' date=' thanks. I think your underestimating your product or there is something wrong with my amp, cause I took it out yesterday and beat it for an hour and half in traffic full tilt and it didn't even get stinky. This is on a RUB1.2500D at 1 ohm with solid electrical behind it. Sounds great, can't wait for it to break in!![/quote']

Ok, so got some updates. The RUB1.2500D took a shit right after this vid.

Apparently there was severe vibration damage to the amp. Can't say that it was like that when I got it or I did it, but I know it is puttin out twice as much as it was when I got it now that it's fixed. There was a diode broke off on one solder joint, the protection light lightbulb was rolling around inside the case, the insulation pads on two of the fetts had slid out of place and the fett where touchin the heatsink, the speaker terminals where completely broke off the board and apparently had been for sometime as there are numerous black spots from where it's been arcing, and one of the RCA towers was completely broken off. Now the case was missing some screws when I got it and I had it mounted on the back of my box and I did see it vibrating pretty bad, so like I said, I can't say I didn't do it. I just feel like that is alot to happen in such a short time (a few days) that I had it installed and also the fact that it was literally putting out half as much as it is now when I got it. Pretty sure I was only gettin 1/2 my input voltage with one of the RCA towers not being active.

Anyway, here's some vids.

Borrowed my boy's Earthquake PHD2 Shredder modded to 1 ohm while he was fixin on my Rubie.

And, big thanks to stanky1219/bassin buick for fixin my amp and loanin me his while he was doing it. True friend. Even did some hot glue work inside and reinforced everything so it's solid as a rock now and all screws are in.

This bish is movin some pretty good air now. Going to wait till I get a decent camera before I waste anymore of yall's time with these BS vids. Here's some pics for now. As with the rest of the theme for the build, it's ugly, but functional...

Panels are not screwed in anywhere, just wedged into place and caulked on the backside.

IMG_20120108_125917.jpg

Ran out of caulk, but this area is pretty sealed with just the wood itself. Think it's fine.

IMG_20120108_125903.jpg

Very noticable difference!!

Still need to hit the rear deck with some deadner and cover up the 6x9 holes.

Front will be covered with carpet or something eventually to hide all imperfections.
