Help building box for 2 12" Icons

Recommended Posts

I ordered two 12" D1 Icons and want to build a box for them before they get here, but I have only built one box before and have had three pre-fab box's before. In all of my sub setups (total of 4) it seemed that my very first enclosure "folded horn" box which is what the salesman told me it was. . Was it actually a folded horn box, I have no idea, BUT according to everyone else apparently you could hear me about 5 blocks away with two 10" memphis subs 250rms each. That box seemed the cleanest i've ever had and it had the port in the middle of the box with a wall in the middle of the port running parallel with it, so basically each subwoofer had its own chamber.

My question is, will the Icon's sound better and get louder in the SSA recommended Icon enclosure, or does anyone know of an enclosure design that would sound better?

Our suggested designs are a great start. You can use them as a base to work from for your particular install. Such as people who have the space and want to run less power can go a little larger, or if someone wants a higher peak they can adjust tuning up etc. :)

It seems with building one of your first enclosures stick with the recommended enclosures... SSA knows best of course, they built the subwoofers. ^^. BUT, if your being heard 5 blocks away, close your windows, turn it down a bit or invest in some sound deadner.

My dad will be helping me with the design and he has been in the wood working business for a long time, he even built his own house lol, so he has quite a bit of experience with wood work, so I'm not to worried about the building piece of it. I just wanted to see if there was anyone on here that could give me advice or help me decide on a design.

One thing I am for sure on with the design is that I want the port to be flared and the subs to sit flush. Can anyone tell me how to flare a port properly? and when doing a double baffle, will I just need enough MDF to support the area inside the box where the sub will be mounted? I was also thinking about maybe doing plexiglass on the top of the box, how do you do plexiglass on a box and will it make the box sound any different?
