Thoughts on Boston Acoustics???

First off... not paying that price... found some used... Boston Acoustics SR60

Anyone ever used or had experience with this set??? Specs look pretty good... It's either that or Hi-Vi F1600 probably... I don't think I have the effort in me to go active...

I haven't heard these in a vehicle but they're in my local shop's soundroom so I've messed with them a bit and compared them directly with a few others and must say that I'm not very impressed with them. I like the Kenwood, Kicker and DD stuff in there much more. I used to like the old BA equipment, maybe they are putting out inferior product now

Digital Designs, yes. They have the Kenwood KFC-P709PS, KFC-1652S, KFC-6950s and KFC-x693 I think.

The DD stuff was the regular cs components and csx coax. I actually like most of the coax stuff better than Bostons components.

What kind of amp do you have? I think you have a HU with processing so if you have a 4 channel amp you should really rethink running active. Something on the DIY market would probably be able to exceed the capabilities of what you've posted for the price.

I wouldn't worry about bi-amping thru a passive crossover, and I've never really been impressed w/ RF's speakers.

That said, I've been interested in hearing the Alpine Type-R comps but haven't gotten around to seeking them out. They use Alpine's Linear Drive Motor, which from the cut-aways they've shown appears to be very similar to Adire's XBL^2 split-gap motor topology. Believe they also use some shorting rings in the motor as well. Could be interesting little speakers.

I wouldn't, for the cost you would have into a cobbled together passive set you would be better off to go with something like those Alpine's that you can get off ebay for $160 shipped that are designed to work as a system. And I highly doubt any of those speakers would perform any better than the Alpine's.

I'm not trying to sell you the Alpine's, but I also don't think what you have listed there is any better of an option.....it's more than likely a worse option.

no doubt... I appreciate the honesty... I like it blunt.. Again, I've never done active so piecing together random drivers was kind of random for me.. I tried to match frequency range and impedance and went from there...

I was looking at Alpine before but the way that most sites have them listed it seemed like they didn't have alot of movement/options... I guess I'll search more... Just for future knowledge, would I be able to go active with the Alpine drivers or just keep it as is???

It depends on the mid's xover.....Alpine has listed on the site that the xover is "integrated" into the mid itself, you would need to be able to wire around the mid's xover in order to truly run active with them.

But as long as it's possible to wire the mid without including the mid's passive xover then yes you could run them active.

How does this qualify as a good suggestion without any real reason? Besides being 100% subjective, listing what you disliked/liked about each product would of been a tad better.

I doubt he tried to steer him away from Boston Acoustics, more of an hey go to your shops and see what you like or dislike. Plain and simple, even if he listed what he liked/disliked about each problem it still would be subjective to the OP.

Everybody has different taste, when I was shopping for components I went to as many shops as I could to get a sample of different comps to see what I liked more. What I like the next person probably wont like, what I was suggested on the forums I didnt really care for when I gave them a listen.

TBH shops are a pretty terrible way to compare equipment to start with. It's unfortunate, but so much of the listening comparison is going to depend on the setup of the shop, any tuning they might have done, etc etc. Aside from the problems of the layout and acoustics of the soundroom/soundboard and how the different speakers will sound relative to the different positions in those soundrooms/soundboards, you have the issue of how the speaker will respond in a vehicle compared with how they perform on a sound board. You also have issues with not knowing how everything is setup and tuned behind the scenes. Quite simply they aren't necessarily as good of a "comparator" as one might imagine.

Hell, some shops might even "tailor" their soundroom to allow their higher margin products to sound better than the lower margin equipment.
