aluminum ports

Recommended Posts

I have a chance to pick up some 6" aluminum tube from work for cheap. Would this cause too much of a hollow sound or echo? I plan on securing them in the box. Possible having an end made that flares. Anyone tried this?

How thick are they? They may have undesired resonance.

About as thick as an exhaust tube. Thought about using some deadening. Maybe a couple CLD tiles. Didn't know how well those would work in the box. Or, just save all the.hassle and get some PVC or possible just go with what I've done before and slot port it.

Definitely going to have resonance issues. I don't see the point unless you want them for aesthetic reasons, but they'll be hidden within the enclosure, so that's out the window.

I agree with these guys, it could cause a resonance issue being that they're only 16/18 gauge (or thinner) thick. Besides the fact that the only reason I would use round port tubes is in the application where a slot port enclosure is getting too large for the space available I wouldn't mess with them. I saw a guy who had done a fantastic job of painting the Aeroports he used with some aluminum/silver paint that looked very much like metal. If it was purely for aesthetics that would be the route to take IMHO.

I have used metal tubes in the past. Worked fine.

I built a solid aluminum box out of 1/8" plate stock with an aluminum port. It was about 1.5ft3. Worked fine.

For SPL?

I've seen some serious SQ setups with aluminum and steel baffles, but never metal enclosures.

No, I had a bunch of plate laying around and was practicing TIG welding. I had posted it on Forceaudio, I'll see if I can dig up the link....

Can't view the link from work, but it was a thread titled "heavy metal"

Found the thread but pictures (if any) must have expired. Cool idea though.

Found a pic. Small square hole above the woofer hole is the vent. Was for a 10" sub.

I used exhaust pipes years ago with no problems, just use some cotton/dacron batting 1" thick and wrap it around the pipe and tape it on there and it will sound just like any other tube used for ports.

Pretty cool, even aluminum I bet it's got some weight to it. :rofl2:
