Decisions, Decisions

Recommended Posts

Here's the deal. I currently drive a 98 K1500 Z71. I've put a good bit of work/money into it: sub build, wheels/tires, HIDs, sound deadener... Just got a lot of sweat put into this thing. My grandfather recently acquired a 92 Ford Explorer that might as well have been driven off the showroom floor yesterday... Thing is CLEAN. 105,000 original miles, cloth seats look new, no cracks in the dash (well, anywhere really), etc... Tires are good, carpet is perfect, and it's mechanically sound. He would sell it to me for $1500. I would like to get $6500 out of my truck, but realistically I could maybe squeeze $5500 out of it. That would leave me with $4000 to do whatever I wanted (2 18s on a 5500 at 0.5 ohm??)

$4000

- $589.95 (DC 270XP)

- $494 (Another Fi BTL N2 18)

- $899 (Crescendo BC5500D)

+ ~$400 (Sell my amp)

- $200 (Sound deadener)

- $300 (mid range, and other things you don't think about when making a list like this)

- $500 (batteries)

= $1,417.05

~ $1,400 end profit with a BAD ASS sound system...

I understand this would be a ton more work, but I think it may be worth it. My truck is extremely bad ass, but there isn't much room for stereo expansion unless I do a blow-through (and fuck that).

What would you guys do? I'm stuck.

Me? Take the explorer. I'm an explorer type of guy.

How many miles are on your truck? What type of driving do you do mostly? What do you look for in a vehicle?

132k

Regular driving, I guess. I'm only 16, so I haven't really found my niche yet I reckon. I like the look of the big 4x4s, but to be honest, I wouldn't want to take my truck in some deep shit.

Dependable, and starting to realize how important gas mileage is lol.

First, Is this vehicle one that you would like besides this situation? But if you like 92 explorers and think its legit, then do it because that is like pretty much God handing you 4k to make your dream system, while still having a vehicle in amazing condish.

Sounds like a sweet deal to me. I think id scoop up on this deal and build your dream system + pocket 1.5k for savings while maintaining a Legit ride in mint condish

What's wrong with a blow through and tonneau cover? Maybe wall it off? What if you can't get $5500 out of your truck? You don't have batteries, enclosure, sub options, shipping, etc. included in your budget. I think you could quickly end up spending more rather than pocketing money unless everything happens to work out just right and fall into place for you. Tough decision, is the Explorer 4x4 and/or V8?

Yeah i'd take the explorer. They can be modded to be extreme off-road vehicles just like any truck can. I love the first generation explorers so my opinion is biased. But the extra cash can't hurt either :)

You're positive you can get that cash for your truck right? And positive your uncle will sell you the explorer for that price right?

I love it, it's a pretty looking vehicle.

Blowthrough = decreasing truck's value by at least $1k. Nobody wants to buy a truck with a big ass hole in the back. I think I might have ninja edited on you, I added the cost of batteries. With the rest of the things (wiring, sub options, shipping, etc) I'd still be sitting around $1000. $1000 that I didn't have before... Explorer is a 4.0L V6, no 4x4. I don't think this is that big of a turn-off for me though.

KBB on my truck is like $5800, with the stuff I've done to it I think $5500 is reasonable. I know how selling cars goes, you never get what you really want, but I truly feel that I could get $5500 out of it.

And yes, he told me $1600 for sure, if I came with $1500 cash I'm 90% sure he'd let it go.

Don't quite understand this part...

I wouldn't buy a vehicle soley on the purpose of your stereo, I did it and its a pretty dumb idea looking back, I still love my car don't get me wrong, but id rather have gone with something a little smaller, any way...

If you overall like the explorer more or want the space, that's one thing, but to buy it for more subs...

And lastly don't plan on ever four wheeling in a ford explorer lol.

I know the ford explorers were the number one vehicle traded in for the cash for clunkers. I know Id never get an explorer.

To give you a reference, I'm 17. This may not be what you want to hear, but I would just keep what you have. You have a nice truck from what i see. Sounds like you like to work on it. I say drive it until it dies. Plus, you may not end up with 1000$ dollars at the end because shit happens. You are going to make a mistake and accidents happen. I ALWAYS keep a 2000$ "Oh Shit fund" in my bank. For example if something went mechanically wrong in my car, id have 2k to fix it and get back on the road. Instead of having no money, a broken car, but a badass sound system. Plus, us teens we make mistakes. Just something to think about.

Thanks for the input guys. I took the explorer for a spin and I wasn't happy with the performance at all. I guess my 5.7L V8 has spoiled me a little bit. I think I'll keep the truck until an opportunity presents itself. My dream car is a 1995-1999 2 Door Tahoe. I wish SO much that I would've went with that over my current truck, but it is what it is. If I luck out on a deal for one of those, or possibly one of the OBS 4 doors, I might go all out, but for now I think I'll stick with the truck.

Mark my words: I WILL have an SUV doing 150s with at least 2 woofers by the time I'm 21!

I'd pick up the Explorer, put the money from the truck in the bank and sit on it for a few years. The Explorer will be cheaper on insurance, cheaper to maintain, and it's a Ford. So not only do you get money from the sale of your truck, you can also bank the money saved on insurance and maintenance costs. You could easily have $10K in the bank in 5 years and by then, I'll bet you'll be looking for a house instead of a car.

Pretty damn sound advice.
