Talking through a fan?

Over the past 18 years I have had countless audio systems. Most of them consisted of two 12" or two 15" and 500-1500w.

There is one particular system that a neighbor had that I will never forget. He had a simple system, two Orion XTR 12" with a small cheap Kenwood 500w amp. His car was a three door, possibly it was a Gulf idk. Why I remember this system is because when the bass hits and when I/he was talking it sounded like we were talking through a fan.

I have never been able to duplicate this effect. No matter how many subs or watts I had. Actually, I havent even sat in too many other cars that could either.

What causes your voice to sound like you are talking through a fan? +145db?

I think it depends on the content being played.

I don't remember any songs off hand, but I remember playing a few that would switch pitches / cut in and out, or some song that had helicopter blades in the background, I remember my throat tingling and our voices sounding like what your describing.

I'll go through some of my old music and see if I can find a song that does it.

Get hold of a cd with sine waves from 20-100hz for instance. Go up the tracks from the bottom and try to talk while playing. At a decent output you are most likely to get this effect somewhere up the frequency range.

It has more to do with material/music played than the actual system itself. Although it must put out a decent sound pressure level, but most systems with amps and subs should be able to get this to work

Any song that's between 25 and 40 hz makes it sound like I'm talking in a fan, and my nostrils move a goodbit when I breath in haha

My fiance says "my boobies jiggle and that hangy thing in my throat vibrates" lol.

Hmmm...

There is more involved than just a certain song. I could have played the same song in my car or my other buddy's car and we wouldnt have the same effect. I think it may have to do with wavelengths(actual length of a wavelength) at certain freqs. Which from car to car it would be different lengths from the speaker to the person.
