differences in enclosures?

Recommended Posts

So im making a thread that may help people in the future on different enclosures for different applications. So what are the physical differences in an spl enclosure compared to a daily driver enclosure or sq enclosure? What separates the two into different catagories? for example does a box that is bigger and tuned high make it a spl enclosure or vise versa? Thanks in advance for your expertize. :drink40:

Pretty simple. Generically speaking, SPL enclosures are designed to have the biggest peak in the response possible which of course is the loudest note, while SQ enclosures are typically designed to have all notes play equally as loud. They are dire opposites.

Spl enclosures are tuned higher, and tend to be smaller to increase power handling.

What if you don't need to increase power handling? Are you sure that always increases your output?

I stopped with just a generic definition for a reason. There are no "rules of thumb" that really work otherwise. The real answer for the OP is to do some reading to actually understand enclosures and ask questions about details he doesn't follow in what he reads.

Most of the time a larger enclosure will yield more output (Obviously putting a 10 in a 10 cubic foot box wouldn't work), however most true spl setups I see are highly powered. There is no absolute rule of thumb, many other things factor in. (Drivers, amps, electrical, vehicle, and the list goes on)

yes this all makes sense, its just i hear people all the time saying there box is more spl oriented or a daily driver enclosure and i just thought if you make it like this it will be more towards this or that. like having a box bigger and tuned lower is daily or vise versa, im looking to do 4 10's with some aero ports and was wanting to have a set at about 31hz for daily and then a set at like 35-36 for more spl when i want it. just didnt know what i should do with the box if i should make it on the smaller side of the rec or on the larger end of recommended, iv heard if you make the box a lil smaller and tune higher then its more for spl but you never know

jus build box to specs and youll geta lil out of both worlds output and sq. companies have their recommendations for a reason.

that is my intentions, just trying to get a better perspective of how enclosure work and how they differ when you change then up like if you do it bigger or smaller and change tuning what will be different in which way
