Need second opinion on ported box for RE SX 18

Recommended Posts

I've never built a box before so here go.

Starting the build tomorrow, are there any changes I need to make?

In the calc. that I use I'm showing those specs (size and port) to give a net of 7.44'3 and a tuning of 29Hz. Looks like you are on the right track. What amp/power is going on this setup?

What kind of vehicle is this going into?

It's going into a 2006 Expedition. I'm going to probably power it with a RE Audio XTX3000.1 (1000 Watts RMS @ 2 Ohms). I got the dual 4 ohm sub so if I decide to run 2 of them, I'll be able to get it down to 1 Ohm. I heard these subs sound pretty good with even 750 watts going to them. Should I go a little bigger with the box and maybe try to get up to 10 cubes?

New dimensions:

For some reason an 8" port seems WAY too big? Is it?

depends on the driver, its probably recommended to have 12-16 in^2 of port area per cubic foot, if so those dimensions should be fine.

All thats left is to attach the top piece, which will be a pain in the ass. The sub comes in tomorrow, pretty excited.

BTW: I'm 6 feet tall. This thing is huge!

Perfect fit. About 1/8" of space on each side of the box.

Box makes my 12" CVR's look like toys!

Getting the box sprayed with bed liner sometime this week. We'll see. I'll post pics tomorrow with the sub in the box and let you guys know how she sounds!

It sure is, pretty pleased with the outcome too. I don't think there is much that I could have done different. It was pretty fun, I finally got to use my pneumatic tools. The only thing that "went wrong" was I guess my pilot holes were a little to small because some of the corners started to split a little bit when I was screwing them together. Either that or it was the humidity. I fixed them pretty easily by filling the tiny splits with wood glue then leaving a clamp on the edge of the board for about 20 minutes. Seems to hold well, wasn't too serious to begin with.

Yeah big box = big port. I called Rhino-Liner. $150 to spray it. Not happening. Any other suggestions for a finish?

O damn that's a lot. I was interested in the price of getting that done. Wrap it in leather or fake leather.

Before you attach the top I'd seriously consider adding some bracing.

I'll get 1 inch dowel rods. 2 runing from top to bottom, 2 front to back, 1 side to side?

Alright here's a sketchup. Would this suffice? The dowels are 2 inches in diameter.

If I should add more braces, lemme know.

The sub comes in today! The UPS tracking info says that it weighs 43 lbs. =) I'm going to go to Lowe's around lunch time to buy dowels for bracing and maybe a wire terminal. Kind of not liking the sound of putting a piece of plastic on something this big. Are there heavy duty and efficient looking alternatives to a plastic radioshack wire terminal? I heard steal bolts work good.

Drill 2 holes and run bolts/nuts for the terminal connections. Not a fan of the plastic terminal connections either.

Will wood glue work as a sealant? (on the bolts)

Drill the holes the exact size of the bolt and use a washer on each side of the wood and you should be good. A little glue or silicone in the hole with the bolt should be fine as well.

Alright thanks bro, sounds like that's the route I'll take. I'll take pics of the sub when it arives and post pics of the progress I make this afternoon. I want to get the box done asap so i can hear this thing tonight. But I want it to be done right too. Sorry for all the questions, I'm a perfectionist lol. So do you think corner braces will be necesary? This thing seems extremely solid as it is but I've never built a box so I don't know what kind of stress this thing may endure lol.
