Aero port vs normal port?

Recommended Posts

ok so what im wanting to know is what are the differences between an aero port or a normal cutout port? which is better for maintaiing spl and sq, more of the lines of getting louder? i do like the style and looks of an aero port but what are the advantages and disadvantages? id there any way to know what size aero port to get for a specific tuning? any help would be greatfully helped :D

I read on here once that aero will be slightly louder on a meter but to the ear will make no difference and I believe aero ports can take up less internal volume than a slot port. I' not 100% on this so correct me if I'm wrong

so i have a bl 12" and want to have my box at 2.25 cb ft after all displacement with a tuning of around 33-34 hz, what would i need as of aero ports to achieve this?

2-4inch aeros.

I'm going to say there's no real advantage in SPL or SQ in either for the most part.

People use aeros for easy to tune. Say for a SPL box, external aeros are super easy to find out the right length for maximum SPL. Where a normal slot port, you would have to basically build a whole new box.

I have a Q in 2.3 with 2-4", tuned to 30hz, the longer I made the ports, the louder it got.

I don't know what calculators Audibel has pinned......but port length depends on cross-sectional area of the port and net volume of the enclosure. Doesn't make a difference if the ports are round or square (although with a square you are more likely to be using an enclosure wall for part of the port, so end correction may come into affect).

Yes you have to factor in the flare itself which adds effective length. This "extra" length depends on the rate of the flare. Let me get on my computer and see if I can find a calculator for flare rate. If not I have the equation for it

You want the ports ends inside the box the furtherest away from the sub as possible.

That's always been how I designed boxes. But some say it doesn't matter, but I think it does.

www.psp-inc.com has a port calculator on their site for aeroports. i like aeroports for external port boxes, easy to change tuning if you plan on competing at all....otherwise, a slot or aeroport is just fine....
