okay i need some real answers here..

as some of you know, i have an 84 300D benz, and i have had this freakin 200a alt lyin around in my room waiting to be installed for 4 months.

My dad is weary about installing this into my car because he is scared that if the regulator goes out, it will overcharge and blow my battery up. Other concerns are the stock wiring (not the big 3 wiring) the dimmer wire, startup wire and all that good stuff (all in a wiring harness) is going to catch fire. His wearyness has caught on to me and i am scared that my car is gonna catch fire.

FYI: my dads been a benz tech for over 20 years, and worked on diesels like mine for a long time, so i kinda tend to believe him.

but upgrading the wires with the alternator shouldnt pose a problem right?

The wire will only pull as much current as it needs.

Voltage is what cooks things.

Commercial battery chargers put out inexcess of 19V to the battery.

Do the batteries blow up ?

No.

Hundreds of thousands of people put H.O alternators on their cars. I havent heard any stories of them catching on fire.

I know your car is a diesel and they dont like high voltage. You could always get an external regulator (Iraggi sells them)

The alternators actual output will depend on load as well. It will not always be putting out the highest amperage, just what it the demand is.

Supa, your conlcusios about voltage cooking things is directly related to current. Ohm's law is a female dog. It takes two to tango.

There is always the possibility. If the regulator goes out, it could full field the alt sending 17+ volts out and tear some stuff up. I've seen it happen, but most of the time, the damage is confined to the alt itself before it reaches the other components. Overcharging a battery can have disastrous results.

As long as it's a quality alt, I don't see the need to worry.

Nathan is good ppl... ask bigbassloyd.. hes had one in his car for like 3 years now.... great alts.... u will be fine

is it ext or int regulated

also if it is internally regulated it has an equal chance of going bad as one from autozone

it is internally regulated (meaning the regulator is on the alt itself right?).

is that second statement a good thing or a bad thing?

any reason why deisels dont like voltage? first time ive heard that before

IEverytime ive seen a diesel truck they run at 12V when on and have 2 batteries.

I guess you could check your voltage at your batt. Might be different for cars, i dont know.

im getting 12-11.8v at the power wire, soo yea its pretty low.

It really depends on the vehicle. I see 12 and 24 volt systems all the time. Some tractors will have both mixed together. They'll run everything but the accessories (lights, stereo, etc) on 24 volts.
