2 15" fi bl's or 1 18" btl for daily on 3kw

Recommended Posts

hey everyone i'm looking to make an upgrade. i currently have 3 12's a crunch gp3000d pro amp which is suppose to be underrated at 3kw rms at 1ohm. i also have 0 gauge wiring a 300 amp alt fatmat throughout the entire vehicles i think two layers in some place but atleast one layer throughout the entire vehicle. i have an optima red top under the hood and a kinetic hc1800 in the back for the subs. i have a 1997 ford explorer sport (2 door) and i am interested in either 2 fi btl's 15's or 1 fi btl 18 n2 model i have enough space to run the 2 15's or the single 18 with no problem now my question is which would give more output. i love lows so im looking to have the box tuned around 30-32hz. both speaker options i'm looking at would be fully loaded. i read in the tech section that if you have less than 2000kw with the cooling option then the bl's are the right choice. so with 2 of them my 3kw should be fine and not push them too much. and we all know the btl's fully loaded can take sum serious wattage so im sure the fully loaded btl 18 could take my 3000kw. i really am looking forward to suggestion by people who have had experience with both or official fi audio support i think i gave a thorough explanation of what im looking for and what i have but feel free to ask me more questions if it helps your suggestions

p.s. i'd also like sugguestions on whether to use the 3 or 4 inch coil options if you think the bl's would work better for my system im also considering at an xs d3100 batter to my set up also with either speaker choice thanks in advance for your help everyone

I also would say the 2 15" bl's would be louder and sound better, but then again its always nice to blow people away with just 1 sub ;), pretty much just toss a coin

yea i was thinking the same thing but i wasnt sure because i've definitely beat some systems with more cone area there was a guy with 2 15's and 1 18 re se subs and my system was clearly louder and clearer but you're right the 1 speaker wow factor is very enticing. thanks for your response i hope to hear alot more from the community and do the fi audio people ever get on here and respond or would it be best to just contact them by email for their opinion?

More cone area with the BL's.

same power... so I would assume the BLs would have more output. :fing34:

yea i was thinking the same thanks any opinion on the 3 vs 4 inch coils? option?

ok just to make things more difficult i want to throw in another curve ball. imo the new smd 18's look just down right sexy and are pretty efficient i saw them being tested on 300rms and were moving plus in a vid steve and his woman said they were louder than the btl's so if i consider the single woofer set up what is everyones opinions fi btl 18 fully loaded or smd 18 i know the the smd is recommended at 3500 rms but my amp is rated at 3000rms and i looked at sum tests ran on them when they first came out saying they were underrated actually pusshing 3200-3500 rms so even at worst case scenario of 3000rms the smd should be pushed nicely sorry about switching things up but im running threw these options before i go through the expensive process of upgrading and having a custom box built thanks again everyone

Ok if your considering an smd then you have some major upgrades to do for your electrical if not already done. Yes the smd is a monster and would most likely tear up a btl, but you need a very powerful amp to push it. I heard they have very high motor strength which makes it more of a spl woofer instead of a daily driver woofer. I think you would be better off getting an 18" btl, there is no need to have any more then an 18" btl lol trust me you wont be dissapointed with it!!

The smd woofer seems to be a "musical" woofer. Not made for pure spl. But I've never heared it !

On 3000 watts a BTL or 2 BLs would be very good. I love the sound of my btl, and it's just a 12" : the 18" must be louder !!!

One btl wouls be cheaper than 2 bls. If you have room, get the 18" btl !
