JL 8W1V2's & Sundown 125.2?

Recommended Posts

The JL 8W1V2's are 4-ohm, and rated at 150w according to JL's site.

The 125.2 is rated at ... 125 x 2 RMS @ 4 ohm.

I think a 125.2 would be sufficient for a pair, but wanted to ask before buying incase someone knows of a reason why this is not a good idea.

Thanks!

Sounds good. Just make sure you don't treat the gain as a volume knob.

Definitely not. I've got a Kicker KQ5 from a while back that does 7v pre-amp outs.. hopefully shouldn't need much gain at all.

Also, a majority of the bass is going to be coming from a 12W7. I just want the 8W1's in the doors to help fill out the frequencies between whatever I end up having my W7 tuned to and the 6.5" midrange from my Bravox 3-way components.

Sounds like a poor implementation to me, and a waste of space and resources.

Why do you think you need something to "bridge the gap" between the W7 and the Bravox?

I don't know that I necessarily need it.. which is exactly why I posted. The only reason that I'm even considering it, is because the Mustangs (with the Shaker 500) come stock with an 8" sub in the doors. I could always just pull it out and use the space to mount the crossover for the Bravox 3-way.

The entire build was planned to consist of:

Pioneer 3300BT HU

Kicker KQ5 EQ

Bravox CS603CF components - with Sundown 125.2

2x JL 8W1V2 in doors - with Sundown 125.2

1x JL 12W7 in rear - with Sundown 1500D

If it'll sound just as good w/o the 8's, or if I wouldn't be able to tell they were even there in the first place, then I can save myself a nice little chunk of cash.

There are really two viable options.

Don't run the 8's and use the 6.5's as midbass as they're intended to be used in the comp set.

Run active and replace the 6.5" midbass with an 8" midbass.

I wouldn't add the 8" inbetween the 6.5" and subwoofer, that's a headache and a bit of a waste. Obviously there would be advantages to using an 8" midbass such as the potential for increased output and possibly decreased distortion, but there are disadvantages as well such as complicating the system and needing to run active.

I run the same components. The 6.5's are pretty good drivers, they have a very deep almost subwoofer like tone to them, which I personally like. Unfortunately I have a terrible resonance due to my installation location so the EQ takes most of that tone away in dealing with that resonance. They have about as much output as you can expect from a 6.5" medium excursion driver. I would suggest you try the comp set as it is and see what you think.

This is what I ended up doing. I made some adapters to go from 8" to 6.5 and mounted it in the stock sub location. Then fabbed up a 5x7 adapter to hold the tweet & mid. I only have about an hour of daylight to work on it after I get off work so I've only gotten 1 door done so far and haven't gotten a chance to actually listen to it yet, but this let me keep the stock look and at least I don't have to worry about where I'm going to mount everything. At least this way I'll have a reference point without the 8's and can go from there if I don't like it.

Thanks for the feedback!

Edit: Also, cutting plastic cutting boards with a dremel is a mess!
