8" Round Port

Im thinking about building a new box to try and improve sq in my setup a little.

i have a 3.75 cu ft box with like 60 inches of port tuned to 32 now, slot port on one side of the two subs. this box is a little bigger than what my subs call for and is an awful lot of port area.

im thinking about bringing the box down to 3.2 or smaller and using a 8 round port and flaring the ends tuning to 32.

if my math is right 8 is 50 sq inches of port correct? im thinking about choking it down to 7" which is like 38~ and run @ 3 cu ft.

im running like 1600-2000 watts BXI2006d

would the round port sound better. as with the smaller box?

edit" running 2 DC audio lvl4 12s. call for 1.5 cu ft ported each.

Honestly, I think it's the drivers more then anything.

Larger port area is used to avoid port noise, going down shouldn't effect sq until you make the port small enough to where there is audible port noise.

Guessing you listen to rap and what not, so 32hz works fine for you.

Larger box yield increased efficiency, flatter response.

What part of sq are you missing, or after?

Okay well overall it doesn't sound as good as I want. It hits hard and can generally keep a steady beat but it sometimes just can't seem to keep up. It sounds like its unloading real low and not really making any noise just moving stuff.

I just had a misunderstanding on how this works. So should I go bigger like 4 feet? And perhaps raise the tuning? I'm not too worried about it slamming the lows I just want it to be responsive.

I don't think going from 3.75cubes to 4cubes is going to be a big improvement. Raising tuning will give more output on the higher spectrum, it may be what your looking for, but I don't want to say "go ahead and do it cause it will" because I don't know, and I don't want to lead you into building a new box and not being happy with it.

Do you have any good friends that would let you swap drivers just for some testing?

I can go way big, I can go like ten feet if I need. And no, I don't really know anyone with systems. If I go like to five feet maybe and tune to 34 will I lose lower output? Just trying to understand how this works somewhat.

5cubes will lower power handling, how much? Not sure. What are the dc drivers rated at for 1.5cubes?

Just a guesstimate, doesn't take cabin characteristics into effect.

They are rated at a thousand at 1.5. I don't think are working very much at all right now.

I have two DC level 4s, in 4.2 cubes after displacement, tuned to 34 hz with about 75 in sq port area and they sound great. I understand the situation youre explaining but I cannot say that I have experienced it at all. Also, I just picked them up recently so I only have a bxi1608d pushing them right noww. So, as far as the box goes, 4.2 cubes is working quite nicely for me. However, as we all know, it is partially vehicle dependent so my two 12s in the trunk of a sedan can easily sound different than your two in what seems to be a trunk (since you say you could afford 10 cubes if need be).

75 inches of port seems like an awful lot...

my port is 4.5x12.5 now. 56 inches. like 15~ per foot. my box is 3.69 cu ft now.

think im gonna move to 4.25 with an 8" port at 34 hz next and see how that sounds.
