Soo... sub choices with avail room... 18-20ft^3

Recommended Posts

soo...

i have since sold my 18" XCON and saz1500 since my alternator could not keep up at all.

i will be getting a 320HP from DC. and maybe upgrading to a 270XP if that doesnt do enough for me. :fing34:

so,

here are my plans:

keeping my headunit (Kenwood HD545U)

going to be using 2 SAZ-2500D's for which ever substage i go with.

i know i will need to get a ton of SDS (sound deadener showdown)

not quite sure on my front stage yet. i would like to stay passive. i dont have much room for custom fabrication. but i would like to keep my Hertz hsk165 components. maybe somehow add an additional set? if i go this route, i will get a Sundown saz100.4

Where i need opinions is my substage!

i would really like to break 150db while sounding good. :D ... and the MAX space i have to work with is:

38in wide, 27in deep, and 31-34in high. (my roof dips in a little towards the rear. this equals 18.41 ft³-20.19 ft³.

so here are my ideas...

1) -2 18" ZCONs i had a XCON and loved it. so i know that the ZCON will sound good as well.

2) -8 sa-8s - never heard any sundown sub in person so yea...

or

3) -4 12" Fi Qs - i like the sound of my xcon better. but just throwing that out there. (currently have a single 12" Q that came with trade +cash from my old setup)

options 1 and 2 are what im leaning towards. i would really like to stay with SSA but can i break into the 150's with the 2 18" ZCONS?

I KNOW that most important factor is the enclosure and install. just wanting others opinions.

i DONT want to wall off my wagon. i want to do a nice box. no 4th order or anything.

subs up, port back?

subs and port foward?

idk...

i will post pictures of my wagon as it is now with the itty bitty 12" Fi Q later tonight.

this will take a while to get done... but it WILL happen. hopefully i can find a better job that pays more than $7.25/hr. and during spring break(this coming week) and summer... i will be working my ass off.

thanks for reading. and ANY input is greatly appriciated.

well, i would like to stay around $1000. give or take. ZCONS will probly be ~$550 each. so $1100 for those.

8 sa-8s would run me $1080 shipped

If those are your only woofer options, opt for the ZCON 18's. If more cone area and power is an option, I'd consider raising your goal to a 155, or a 160.

DON'T deaden until everything is installed and you've done some testing, it can hurt your score.

I was thinking 4-6 15"s would do better. :)

yea... i kno. lol. i pretty much narrowed it down in the past 5min to ZCONS (open to others)

and 4 15" ZCONs? hell yea. but that would be $2k++ in subs and $2k++in amps. (i would then do 2 saz4500s.)

decisions decisions...

Just because you end up using more drivers doesn't mean you need more amps...

you don't need to give it near rms for it to "work properly"...

Coulda kept your xcon and gotten a few more and probably get beat your goal if done right...

SSA seems like a great line of subs, and ive yet to hear a bad review, but Why not keep your options open. BTL, Lvl 4xl, Crossfire subs, Orion HCCA. Im not knocking the SSA subs, but there are other options.

I think 8 SA-8's would be legit, but I don't think they would do the best. 2 Zcon's is probably what I would pick out of your list. What about fi sub's?.. Also 4-15's would be great as well.

I know that I could have kept my xcon and added more. But the guy offered too good of a deal. And I know that I don't "have" to use more amps. That's just what I would do. My number one cHoice would be 4 15" zcons. Maybe I could do 2 and then two more down the road... thanks for all the input everyone. Keep it comin. :)

Soo... here is my space to work with.

2011-04-02_16-22-31_700.jpg

2011-04-02_16-22-41_944.jpg

This is where I took out my third row seating. Just like my last box, it will sit flush in this space.

Where the Fi Q is right now is where I hope to house most of my batteries. I think 2 XS D3100s would fit.

I think I will do a false floor above my batteries. No idea at all where I will put the amps. Here's where they are now.

its like a little carpet covered platform with hinges on it. Easy to run wires under and cover them up. Almost seems it was made for amps. Lol

Thanks for that man. I wish I had another wagon to do. I would go crazy and wall it all the way to the back of the front seats. Lol. Maybe 8 18"s but I don't so... yea.

Is that height all the way to your roof?

Using the median height out of the two you listed(32.5"), you only have 16.7ft^3 to work with, and that's before any displacements and with only one layer of 3/4" material. Double the baffle and you're looking at 16.34ft^3, double up all around and you're looking at 14.34ft^3.

Yea I didn't take into account for the mdf. Lol. And I don't mind doing a "wall". Its just that I can seal it all off. Would it still be good to do a wall without sealing? What would have a better chance of getting louder? 3 15" zcons or 2 15" zcons?

You'd have to seal it off to get the best results. Just use MDF to make an extra baffle that'll fill in all the big gaps the best that you can, then just use some expanding foam behind it to fill in the small spaces. Three 15" Zcons would be great is using a box that's doubled up all around. You'll have about 10-10.5ft^3 after all displacements. Even Xcons would work well in that situation, and would probably do better with the power you're using.

Hmm... ok. So if I were to do 3 15" zcons, and use say... 2 saz3500s strapped. What would the final load be? 1.33 ohm?

If you got the D2 coils, series wired each sub individually, then paralleled them together...yes.
