Want to add midbass to system

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 nissan altima without the bose speaker system. I currently have a Pioneer deh-4200ub headunit and in the front I put in 2 alpine type S coaxial speakers. In the rear deck are 2 pioneer 6x9s that were installed by the previous owner. Im looking to add some more midbass to my system because the current speakers just seem sort of flat. I dont have an amp hooked up and the HU is powering the speakers. Ive read here that an amp is necessary to get the most out of your speakers because the HU pushes something like 22w. Im pretty content with the type S's up front sq wise. They are 5 1/4 if I remember right and thats all that would fit in there without fabrication so that is why I put them in instead of components. I dont want to do any kind of crazy fabrication because honestly I just dont have the ability. I was thinking of getting adapter plates for the rear deck for 6.5's because from what Ive read 6x9's are an awkward size and dont produce good sound quality. Ive also read that most of you guys dont mess with the rear speakers because they dont make a difference, but with my current coaxials up front do you think that adding components to the rear would add midbass? Or would just 6.5 drivers or something be better? Ive been researching and havent been able to decide what would be best. My overall budget would be preferable around 200 or 250. Id rather not go over that but if I have to maybe I could. So far if I went the component route Ive been looking at the Crescendo Audio 6.5's ive also seen bangingmc's build log and liked the type r's but they would probly be over my budget. I dont know where to start on the amp situation I've seen some hifonics amps for my price range but have a friend who has had bad experiences with them so I know i dont want those. I havent looked hard at amps because I dont really know what I need. Should i get a 2 channel for just the 6.5's or a 4 channel and power the type s's? Theyre coax's so idk. Im just looking for some info on where to start here. I know you guys say to listen to the speakers myself because everyone's ears are different and once I get a direction to head in Ill try to find some stores. Sorry for so much information I just want to be sure to include all you may need to know. Any input would really be appreciated because im fairly lost. Thanks

Kind of flat isn't so descriptive.

Midbasses aren't your answer.

The stock "22w" is probably less than 5w.

6x9's are not ackward, just aren't really any good options in that size. Doesn't mean you can't get midbass out of them. Rear midbass is strange though.

Fixing the install on the front speaks and getting some power on them is step 1.

Sorry for the lack of description with kind of flat haha. I just mean that there is like no bass. Im not comparing it to a car with subs or anything but compared to cars ive ridden in with factory speakers and no drivers or anything just door speakers those just seem to have more bass and sound better. The rear seems to vibrate alot at certain frequencies. It could be distortion? I dont really no its not all songs and I dont think its at a real low frequency seems to be at upper mid maybe? Idk im not very knowledgable with this stuff. Im basically just trying to get a system with good overall sound quality nothing super crazy my musical preferance is mostly indie but some dubstep and rap. So because like you said no good options are available in 6x9 getting a 6.5 adapter would be good right? I was thinking adding better speakers that are amplified in the rear would add some bass without having to fabricate anything up front because I probly wouldnt be able to and for resale purposes. Like you said about the HU's 5w its pretty low so I was thinking an amp would be a must. Would adding comps to the rear and amplifying the type s's be good or is that a stupid idea? Like I said im no expert so im just looking for some help in deciding what to do

i would leave the 6x9s as fill, kit kick panel pods and get a set of 6.5 components leave the 5.25s in the doors and get a four ch for your front stage. leave the 6x9s on deck power.

if thats not enough get a 6.5 - 8" woofer in a tiny sealed box. mounted under the package tray... (rear deck/top of trunk)

but i am nooooooo sq expert at all. just the approach i would take...

I hadnt realy considered kickpods. Id be alittle concerned instaling them tho because I dont keep my cars for more than 2 years I get a car from our dealership and drive it for awhile then switch. The closer the car stays to stock the better because of that. I dont mind mounting an amp and crossover cuz its not too noticeable and when I go to sell it I could leave it or probly take the components etc out. I just got this car tho so Ill have it for at least a year or so and really dont care for the current sound system and just wanted to upgrade it. but I guess if I didnt do the kickpods what would you guys reccomend?

Edit: when I say stock I just mean appearance wise not oem speakers etc

If you aren't going to run subs, then why not a four channel amp so you can fix the fronts and mount some 6x9" subs IB in the rear deck. Won't be "killer bass" but a HUGE improvement and super budget friendly. Then if you still don't like your fronts you can address those.

Just be sure to get an amp with a HP/LP circuit and your golden.

Ok Ill look in to that thanks I appreciate it. I just had no idea what direction to head in. Im just trying to learn this stuff so how come you reccomend 6x9 subs over the comps or 6.5 subs? IB as in infinite baffle right so the speakers are just mounted standard. Im just asking so im slightly informed before I go about doing all this I dont wanna half ass it or nothin
