Subwoofer for the boat

Recommended Posts

My buddy wants me to put a system in his boat, and I'm looking for a sub any suggestions?

What space do you have to work with? i.e. how much space for the sub and box? We need to know what will fit and be in the proper enclosure to function properly before we can recommend anything.

Because of the open top of the boat you will want as efficent of sub set up as you can fit. Because of the space you probably are limited to a 10 or 12 inch. You don't need a low end monster, you need something geared towards getting loud on low power since you are limited on space and power.

The Alpine you linked to is made for a sealed enclosure with an optimum volume of 4.8 cu ft OR infinite baffle. If you are set on using a marine sub I personally would buy this. http://www.crutchfield.com/s_107MM1240/Polk-Audio-MM1240.html?search=polk+mm1240+ultra&tp=111

I am sure you could find it a little cheaper than Crutchfield.

Would love to, I have one in my car and I love it. I'm just unsure about how non-marine subs would handle water

marine subs cant take any water too , the cone can , the rest is just as vounerable

ask Nick or Scott if the cone could be treated to make it more waterresistant ...

Really like that sub, should I go sealed or ported?

Well it would help if you gave us some insight on the boat, the goals and such...

JL audio makes the best marine speakers in my opinion. Had lots of good experience with them. I've used Kenwood marine speakers and had good luck with those also.

This was a pretty budget friendly install and it's plenty loud for when you are out on the sandbars. Going to be adding an additional set of speakers in the front this coming summer.

Kissing the leg room goodbye? I've seen/installed a bunch of boat systems. Quite the norm where I live. When I asked for details on the boat a picture of some non-specific, no room in front of the passengers knees boat isn't so helpful.

What you can't see in the pic is the row of wakeboard boats behind the row of big boats. Typically 50-100 or so of those alone each weekend with another 300-400 other boats.

The sub you don't have to worry about in the elements, but the box you will. I would recommend a rubber surround, metal coned driver though and porting in such a way that moisture won't collect in the box. All surfaces of the box should be sealed as well. I'd also avoid carpet as it will mold unless you buy expensive marine carpet.

This subs optimal space is .88 cu ft sealed or 1.58 cu ft ported. If you can fit ported it will have alittle more output.

That's one of my buddies boats. A bit scared of the liability, but there are a few he trusts. Need to work out a release of liability form for him and it would be even better. And when driving across the lake he has a HUGE American Flag he attaches to it. :)
