double/triple layering

Recommended Posts

Alright, so the verdict is that it's Grade B plywood. Worth double stacking it on the inside or no?EDIT: And what about fiberglass? Still think it's overkill or no?
Can you just not use it? It is really a bad material for a box. You should switch to just mdf.

The only thing is i have already put the box into my car and there is pretty much no way to pull it out with breaking it down. I wouldn't have a problem with that normally but we have put a lot of work into it and i know my build partner doesn't have enough time to start over given his schedule

Sorry for the double post! But!!I am having some trouble with my port. I was told to watch my port area because that would make a huge difference and help so that there would be no port noise. Now, tomorrow or maybe tonight if i can find the paper, i will give you what i have in terms of room and will let you know what area i have to work with. But i believe the big problem is to keep the length low, i think i only have 12 inches to work with. Not exactly remembering what it was
Going to have to bend it. Before doing anything else I'd recommend posting everything you plan to do up here as it seems like there are some issues.

What do you mean bend it? The thing i plan to do is to double layer it with i guess MDF now, then add bracing on top of that to hold the box together, then fiberglass. Also making another removable port for my box and tune it down to 32. With the layering and bracing, i will be sitting at 14 cubes. Right now though, i am sitting at 17

Your going to have to bend the port like an "L" so you can have more port length then 12"...

You called him your partner :gayhaaay1:

Then I'd definitely add a layer of mdf like originally planned. Getting as much "real" box material in there as possible is necessary.

Not sure how you planned to port this if it is already in your car and you are limited in depth. I would figure that out before spending another minute installing because this too could cause you to significantly change your enclosure.

I guess i understand that and i know how it's done i just don't know if i have room to do it and i am not sure if it can work with a removable port...

Yeah yeah. Well we planned a port and we assumed that we had enough space. I apologize for not having everything exact going into this. This is my first box/wall build ever, so i am learning as i go. Why does it have to be MDF? What difference does that make rather then using plywood? I know plywood is more flexible but that's about it. Also, with the port, we made it interchangeable so that way once we mess up the port we can build another one. Because i knew i was going to mess it up some how. I have been asking people questions about what i need and this and that i could never really get a solid response so i just went for it

Sounds like you tried building a house before laying the foundation.

Plywood is flexible, less dense. I wouldn't want my box, port flexing while the drivers are playing, would you?

Well i thought i knew what i was doing at the time. My box actually has a pretty good foundation though ;)

Yeah i know but i was GUARANTEED that the plywood, if braced right, wouldn't move an inch. Even though i tried explaining to him that he doesn't quite understand that my subs were being underpowered and the box will flex. But he wouldn't listen so i kinda wanted to do it his way so he could see that he was wrong. But now i realize that now i just will have a shitty box.

EDIT: We still did plan though, just not correctly.

Just half an inch :P

Hey man there's a first time for everything I'm not ragging on ya.

Hopefully you can get everything in order and make it work.

Lol yeah for sure bro.

Yeah i understand, i just feel super bummed that i did this wrong. I wanted to do it right the first time and i thought i was going to but now i see that i messed up kinda big time. Dang man. Just super bummed.

EDIT: Do you think that i should use fiberglass with the inside layer of MDF or just use MDF and bracing?

Personally I wouldn't bother with the fiberglass, If I was mad competing and looking for an extra tenth then perhaps :P

2 SSA prototypes with a power handling of 4,000 RMS pushed by 2 AQX3500's, 270xp DC power alt, and then as of right now one 1800 but soon to be 2-3 3100's XS batteries

I'd double up all around.

Really? Do you think it would just make it weaker and not worth while?

Oh really? So with the MDF double layer it, do you agree with stefanhinote on fiberglass? Not that i don't trust him in the least bit but it's nice to see both sides of something.

P.S. Me and my build "buddy" talked about doing an L and he says he knows exactly how to do it and has done it so it won't be a problem. Problem solved...?

Not problem solved per se.........It will effect your box and what the final amount of cubic feet it has internally but it is a step in the right direction man.

And don't feel bad man. We ALL are still learning. When you quit learning its time to hang it up man.

That's a good point. We built big so that we had the option to cut down instead of being screwed. I have 17 cubes that i need to get to 14. The only question i have is, how do a calculate how much space that L is going to take? I am using the Torres Box Tuning calculator and i don't really know how to calculate it

Also, plywood is more rigid than MDF, so it'll naturally flex less.

So what do you think about the whole layering situation, MDF inside with fiberglass, MDF inside without fiberglass, or double stack grade (?) plywood?

Even the 5-layer stuff for cheap at Home Depot is more rigid than MDF. Just barely lean MDF against a wall and it'll sag/warp in no time.

I took your "rigid" as meaning flexible with the implications of coloring sound. In which case cheap plywood is particularly bad.
