Big Ports.

Recommended Posts

Who is under the impression that bigger ports have narrower band widths compared to smaller port boxes?

I have heard this a few times in the last few days. I wanna if this is a common miss-conception.

Are you talking about vent size or box size?

I haven't ever noticed anyone saying a larger vent would decrease bandwidth....

Can you give an explanation as to why it does/doesn't?

I wish I could give you the technical reasons for why large port don't get peaky, but I don't know for sure the reason.

Until it stops acting like a port (Hemolitz Resonator) because it is too big (or extremely small), the only difference in overall response will be compression.

Any other differences people find/think they find is do to miss-alignment...

i believe you are referring to mechanical bandwidth?

If your design is using far too large of a port, it can cause the sub(s) to unload a lot easier reducing the available bandwidth that can be played for a mechanical reason.

A larger port will also have a steeper roll-off below tuning, from what I've noticed. Which kinda goes with what you said, Shizzon.

Not quite. lol I haven't talked to him in months. I've been building alot of boxes lately with fairly substantial, 20-22^2 per cube is what it works out to, ports and have see nothing but success.

Usually a very flat response, usually within a single db from 28Hz-55Hz with a tuning around 33Hz-35Hz.

But yes, if the design itself isn't right the woofers will unload FAR easier then a box with a small port. But there are ways to counter act most unloading issues. ;)

If your having success with designs, why question them? We both know we've got these designs down pat, some people are just jealous :P

I'm not questioning it. lol

I'm asking who thinks big ports are peaky? Trying to help educate people.

oh i have never heard large ports were peaky..

If tuned right, they are more efficient, obviously.

I'm not sure what I want... But epic is what I need.... Currently 2.5 cubes... tuned to 29hz.... What could I do for a more awesome sound?lol... I'm an idiot... If I go bigger on box design and stick with 29hz what will that do? Say go 3 cubes after displacement of subwoofer and port...? Can I expect any gains? I am looking for more umph at lower frequencies without sacrificing too much on the 60-85hz range.. Right now, I think it loses slight output at that range meaning the lower end in the 30hz sounds louder... Or should I be dialing more specifics into my amplifier? I'm at a loss right now... Should I just put more than 500w power to it and that should get me going? I'm kinda wondering ...

would I be better doing some round ports instead of venting? I'm just curious, maybe I'm asking for alot off of my 500w JL amplifier on my Icon...

I have read recently that aeroports are peaky compared to slot ports, I have my doubts though.

I know SPL boxes can be peaky as they are supposed to b(large or small)

They are only peaky if you make them peaky.
