Q10 Ported, or Q12 Sealed

Recommended Posts

Okay. For starters i have very limited space. And enough money for either of these. And an amp to power it. Max dimensions i have are 30 wide, 17 deep, and 14 wide.

I know that i can fit a sealed box for either of them in this space. But i'm torn between if the 12 sealed will be loud or not. I know sealed will be better sound quality. But i want good sound quality. And plenty of loud. Like. PLENTY loud.

Basically i'm wondering if the 12 will be louder sealed than the 10 will be ported.

do you mean sealed 12 compared to ported 10?

From your max dimensions it looks like a ported enclosure for a 10" Q would fit well. I came up with 1.6cubes from max dimensions, and driver displacement is 0.12, and specs from fi is .5-1.2 cuft @ 28-33Hz.

So after driver displacement and depending on your actual box dimensions, you should fall into the higher spectrum of recommended volume.

You can always tune lower to even out the response so to speak. Say ~29hz.

What subwoofers have you owned / heard in the past? What sounded good to you?

I understand you want SQ, but sometimes people get the idea that spl geared drivers such as the bl or btl aren't musical, and that's not the case ;)

Yeah. That is what i meant. Sorry. And that's great. I have a buddy who designed me a box for the 10 already. but i'm just wondering if the 12 will sound better and be just as loud as the 10. Or if the 10 will be remarkably louder. With less SQ.

If using 3/4 inch mdf I get 28 x 15.5 x 12.5 = 3.139 cubic feet internal minus port and sub = 1.8 to 2 cubes net. I would go ported with the 12

The only difference between the 10" driver and 12" driver is output, depending on the enclosure. The larger driver will not have less sq.

But depending on the enclosure, one could have more or less output, or more or less linear response.

I would go for the 10" ported, it fits your dimensions well and I believe it would have more output then a sealed 12"

The calculator i used got me 3.1 blah blah. something like that. and its plenty. I'm probably gonna go with the ported 10. Just to make sure everything fits well.

A ported Q 10 would be louder than a sealed 12 (given they were both in optimal boxes). Ported Qs sound freakin amazing and have great output, you do not have to have a sealed box for SQ

just finished a sealed q 12 for a friend and its sounds good, but we will be building a ported enclosure for it because the output we want is not there. I have a BL 12 ported to 33hz in about 3 cubes and it sounds amazing, a lot cleaner than two cvx 10's that i had. if you can fit the 12 go with the 12 and port it, you won't be dissapointed

the problem is, is that he doesnt have enuff room for a ported 12 with sufficent port area...there would be no audible diff from a ported 12 anyways

Aero ports should be mentioned. They save a significant amount of space and are easy as pie to use. Could allow for a ported 12.

PSP Aero Ports, check into them. They're sold at PartExpress and MadiSound for sure.

i told him we could either do a 10 with an internal slot port or 12 with external aeros...but with the way his trunk is set up i dont think the aeros would work real well
