Need advice on electrical upgrades

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

I will buy a 2500-3000 watts amplifier when I find a good deal.

With my 2 amps (Sundown saz1500 and sax 50.4 bridged) I have no voltage drops, no dimming lights. But I know my stock battery will have trouble with a more powerful bass amplifier.

I don't want to change that stock battery : it's 2.5 year-old but still very strong !

I did add a 0 ga wire from batt(-) to ground and another 0 ga wire from engine block to batt(-). I can't access the alt, it's under a lot of things !

Here is my question : how bad is it to just add an AGM batt in the back ? Will it hurt my stock batt ?

I can have access to Yellowtop, XS, or Kinetic locally. The Yellowtops are the less expensive, but I can add an XS D925 easily.

What can be the best choice in my case ?

Add a second small AGM batt in the back, or just put a big AGM under the hood and get rid of the stock batt ?

What would you do ?

Thanks

Id just get a bigger battery for less wire run. But some people will consider it wasteful with such a new battery.

Obviously I'd see how it fairs with the equipment installed first.

I got lucky and was able to sell my optima to a co-worker after I got my Kinetik. His 07 mustang wad a bitch to change out the battery though. LOL

A small agm in back will add the battery reserve your looking for for the current system but if you increase your current demand with bigger amplifier(s), adding more batteries will be required. Also you will need to make sure the factory alt can handle the increased battery reserve.

I hope the factory alt can keep up !

so you're telling me I can simply add a small AGM batt in the back ?

I know the best thing to do would be to just run a big AGM batt under the hood, but my factory batt is still very good. It would be a waste to take it out.

I must think about it more !

Thanks

I run an AGM battery (XS Power d1200) in the back of my vehicle with a "normal" interstate battery in front. Everything works just fine. I would get the XS Power battery. IMO they are better than yellow and kinetik and I have owned all three brands before. I have no voltage drops with two SAZ1500s strapped and a MB Quart DSC480. But my stock alternator is also 160amps. Even if you add an extra battery I don't see how you are going to be able to run your stereo system for very long without voltage drops. What is your stock alternator size?

I don't know what is my alternator size !!! But I know it can keep up with what I have for some times. I can't play for too long here, as we don't have roads to drive for hours !!!

My island is 90 km long, and 40 km large only.:peepwall:

The engine is a Diesel 2.0 liters. I think the alt is strong, because diesel needs good power to start.

I have quite the same voltage readings with or without the system playing ! And I check it very very often ! My voltage is even better since I took the 0 ga wire coming from the engine block to the batt(-) . It was going to a ground point before. Good improvment on the voltage readings !

Thanks for your advices.

I keep thinking about what to do.
