strange sound on my N2

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I installed my 12" BTL N2 2 days ago.

The box is ported to 32 Hz, 2.1 ft3.

I run a Sundown saz 1500 at 1 ohm.

Last night I took time to test this setup and I was surprised to hear a strange sound at the highest volume. I kept the exact same settings than with my previous setup (1 ssa xcon 15" on the same amp).

On a certain note on a song from Mike Jones a weird sound is coming from the sub, and not in the port. On low bass notes there is no problem, but on a higher note the sub reacts badly : how can I describe it ? Like a sheet of paper moving ! It's scarry.

I need to turn down the gain on the amplifier.

I checked the inside of the box, nothing was loosed, all strong.

I never hgeared this noise from any sub I had. I know there is a problem in the sub.

I will tell you later today which song exactly.

What can I do more to trouble check that ?

Shouldn't be playing the 'high' frequencies anyhow..

Too much gain and volume knob could be making the moving assembly freak out.

When I said "high" I meant way under 80 Hz (LPF @ 80Hz on the hu).

Maybe the gain setting moved alone! I did not touch it. I will turn it down today.

I'll let you know how it works.

It's only when I play at 40 on 63 max volume on the hu. At 36 : no problem at all.

Thanks.

The output of amplifier changes with frequency due to the system impedance. Because it is OK at one frequency, doesn't mean it won't run out of gas at another frequency. You may be running the amp into hard clipping, and that is audible. It can make all kinds of wierd noises.

The numbers you quote about your headunit settings are arbitrary...

NDMstang65 knows more about that sub than anyone else, I would listen to what he says....

might need to turn the lpf down more?

Since it gets worse with volume but only when it's already loud.. it might be clipped too much.

Your headunit might be boosting the upper notes too since Pioneers do have a built in EQ.

Not even going to lie..I roll my sub off at 18dB/octave at 56Hz.

Mids with balls help :)

So u mean they are supposed to make weird noises above 60-70 hz? :s

I don't think there that problem occured on the older btl's... But i don't know for sure.

OP:

CAn you make a video?

NO.

that's not what is being implied.

It is implied that something is happening in the upper frequencies which is more than likely causing more power to be received by the sub than expected.

Are you serious? How did you get that out of this thread?

This is exactly what mine did when I blew it... on the low notes (30's) you couldn't really tell, but above 45-50 it sounded like a bolt was bouncing around on top of my cone....

Ok, i thought the same thing, before NDM answered again...

Read above, what NDM wrote.

That is why i was doubting. It's just writting in a weird way.(imo)

Welcome to my world...it involves yelling at the computer screen, calming down, and then responding with a smile.

I am in the process of making movies to explain things due to the lack of people wanting to read. The attention span of our target audience is the same of a gnat due to twitter, facebook, myspace, youtube, and texting. If you aren't tweeting and constantly saying HEY LOOK WHAT I CAN DO..with a video or a picture they zone out.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the speakers...if i said this once, i've said it a thousand times. Speakers are stupid. They simply do..what you tell them to do. In the environment that you place them in.

As stated, ^^^ He is correct with his statements.

Edit: All of the soft parts, coils, spiders etc. included are 100% the same from the previous BTL. We backed motor strength down on the N2 simply because it causes a dip in the response curve in a daily driving application.

No dude..it's called a statement...and you are reading waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too far into it.

I do not like green eggs and ham...does that mean green eggs and ham is bad? No. Sam I am loved it. I however, do not like green eggs and ham. I like blue eggs and ham.

get it?

honestly.. i do not know how you guys can fry coils and act surprised...

How many members on here that compete daily drive with TONS more power than the average guy.. and never have problems?

A LOT of people.

Why do they not have problems?

I don't know how to explain it without pissing someone off so i'll just leave it be.

Sorry for all this...but it's the first time this happens to me on a sub.

I turned the gain down this morning and no noise at all. So Nick must be right.

I will cross the sub lower later and test it.

I did not play long with the noise. A few...seconds since I noticed something. I will NOT blow anything !

I think the hype of watching Fi you tube vids has finally caught up with the masses. Seeing people put up HUGE numbers throwing shit loads of power on subs has everyone thinking it's soooooooo easy to do. Buy a big expensive amp and a Fi sub and you are magically are the loudest in town. Nope. That takes a lot more effort, knowledge, and testing than just lots money to waste to make that happen. So..... they crank on the amp gain because they are disappointed they didn't break the doors off their car like they saw on that video. Why? Because that's the only thing they have the knowledge of to make things louder. Buyers expectations are just too high.

OP this is not directed at you at all. Just saying.

Play around with your settings and dial it in. I am sure you will get it where you like it after some time playing around with it.

When we heared the noise, we took off the sub to check all the bracings, we put the wires in another way. Then we understood it was the sub and not the box.

Honestly it sounded like clipping! And that's what my installer told me. He works in the pro audio world and has a very big system for live events. He knows his business.

I never said the sub is not good. I simply asked for more advice.

I totally agree with you Sir Lancelot.

But I had the same gain setting with my Xcon and my L7 (both in the same box).

This is a new sub, with a new box, so it must need a new setting.

I will play with it and I'm confident, it will good !!!

Just like there's another brand new pickup truck wrapped around a telephone pole :)..which is clearly the trucks fault for doing it..right?

Alain - Glad the gain adjustment fixed the issues. My saying still stands true. Speakers are stupid, they simply do what you tell them to do.

Need to post this again. To make sure everybody can read it.

Just cause the motor structure changed to a odd looking design, its horrible. That's what people are thinking. Even though its still VERY similar to the older model BTL's.

I swear you need a car audio IQ test before buying any sub over 1000rms, amps also. Idiots kill me.
