Can Anyone help me solve my problem?

Recommended Posts

I just hooked up two 12" dual 2 ohm Ascendant Audio Havocs powered by a sundown audion saz -2500 amplifier in my 2004 dodge ram quad quab in a bassforms box. Before this i had two 12 inch kicker cvr powered by a cheap 2500 watt ssl amp.

The problem im having is first i think one of the subs is busted, it sounds like a voice coil it rattles as if its not tight until you hold the sub down, when you push on the dust cap off it it rattles profusely so i think i may need to send it back. My second problem is my setup is no louder then it was before. i mean its loud but i expected it to be a decent level louder then it was. I have my subs hooked up to produce a 1 ohm load. My box only has one set up terminals so i have both subs ran to that one terminal and then out using only one set of the positve and negative setup on the amp. Can anyone help me out please its super frustrating?

First problem i see is you said you have 2 d2 havocs wired to 1 ohm. you need 2 d1 havocs to wire to one ohm. You can only wire to .5 ohm 2 ohm and 8 ohm.

You could try here for checking your wiring of the subs: http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer_configurations.asp?Q=2&I=22

You dont have your subs wired for a 1 ohm final load, I bet you have your subs wired to 0.5 ohms and you blew one.

ill check the wiring, i may have just typed it up wrong, but the sub was messed up before i hooked it up on the sundown amp. I hooked it up to my buddies kicker amp and we played it for 10 minutes in his box and the whole time it did the rattling thing, i just figured it was his box since it was a cheap one but now that its in mine i know somethings wrong with it.

To be honest, i cant remember which ones i bought, i bought them this past summer with the intention of installing and i remember then, but i could have sworn i bought dual 2 ohms. Now that yall mention it i honestly cant remember because its been so long, is there any way for me to tell?

If you purchased online you should have a "receipt".... Or you can use a DMM to read the coils... I don't particularly know how but GOOGLE might... :)

Put a DMM on one set of coils on a driver, if it reads close to 1.8ohms then it's D2. Close being within .1

if there installed and you dont wanna pull em out of the box just use a multimeter at the wires you put into the amp, should give you a good idea of how they are wired.

Does anyone think unhooking both subs and running them both seperately to the amp might help anything?

you could tell if the rattling noise goes away, then the other driver is faulty. :ughdunno:

Well i meant do you think it would be louder that way, i just feel like im not getting enough power out of them their rated at 1250 watt rms a piece and i paid way more for this setup than my previous one. Which i think they should blow away my entry level kickers i had before. As far as the sub i cant decide if its busted or not, if i hold the lip down the sound goes away so im gonna file my box down a little and maybe see if the sub just isnt seated properly all the way in.

Sorry I misread and thought you were going to run each driver individually for the purposes of finding out which one was making the "rattling noise".

If there wired correctly to begin with, then rewiring each driver to the amp will do nothing.

Got any pictures of your box?

The "rattling" that you are describing sounds like a bad voice coil. Do you have a DMM? I would recommend pulling the subs out of the box and testing the coils to find out what coil configuration you have, because you might have accidentally wired to 8 ohms which wouldnt pull much power from the amp.

i dont have a dmm, is there anywhere i can get one for kinda cheap (college student) so money is a problem haha. But i dont have an actual picture of my box, but here it is from the website

http://www.bassforms.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BF212RAM

Im pretty sure its not the box ive checked the box and theres no cracks in the fiberglass or anything of that nature.

Really hard to help you without a DMM to check the coils and wiring.

If you don't have one you can borrow from someone and money is really that tight......go to Walmart and buy one. Use it for the day or two it takes to figure out what's going on....then return it (make sure you keep your receipt). I typically don't condone this type of behavior but it's going to be really hard to troubleshoot without one.

One thing you might want to check is if there is enough clearence inside the box for the magnet. The sub are pretty deep but I know some of the underseat enclosures are limited by the magnet diameter as well. You may be vibrating the back of the magnet off the inside of the box, that may be why the sound is less or goes away when you push on it.

Just another thing to check.

Good luck

Chad

the dmm is reading anywhere from 1.9 to about 2.1, 2.2ish. So im guessing its a dual 2 ohm so now what?

Take out the sub that you say is broken and inspect to see if anything is loose like the spider. Also check the dust cap to see if its glued on and not starting to come off.

a little update, i took it to a shop here in my town the guy was really no help but he said he thinks the subs are just to big. what i dont get is they require less airspace then what i was running before, so maybe just get something with a smaller magnet and everything for displacement purposes?

First thing is I would FIX the other sub before concluding that anything is louder or not. 2nd off is the box optimal for those subs? I know that Kicker CVR's can rattle crap in whatever junky box they are put into. Sometimes people mistake their crappy sound for more volume.

You say the subs are just too big. Did you account for the volume they take up, did you make your box optimal for the 2 subs? Is it really that difficult to find the receipt for what you bought? Or maybe contact ascendant and see if they can pull it up? Do you have enough electrical to honestly support a real 2500W of power?
