my understanding is that the distance should be the same 'at least' as the width of the pole vent, i havent looked at the rear of my rl-p in months but i seem to remember the pole vent being closer to 2,or even 2.5 inches in diamiter?

Ive seen subs with normal pole vents, then i saw a SE 12's pole vent, the thing is massive, you can stick quarters in it !

i usually try to allow a minimum of just a 1/2" in tight fighting situations, but have used as little as 1/4" with no ill effects. of course, the more the better in this situation.
