Electrical powering a sundown 2500d

Recommended Posts

I have a 110amp alternator and I hope to get a sundown 2500d amp. If I were to get http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/store/products/XS-Power-D6500-Battery.html would I get by? Im willing to get two of them if necessary. I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze and idk if there is any alternators on the market for this car. So would simply upgrading battery's allow me to run this amp fine?

Upgrading your starting battery and the big 3 will help. Ultimately adding any additional batteries will increase the load on your alternator that will already be taxed due to the power retirements of a large amplifier. If you are easy on the volume knob you might be fine, really depends on your listening taste.

I am 99.99% sure you would need an alternator made for your vehicle. I highly doubt somebody has one stocked on the shelf. This is a new model car and probably not too popular with audio enthusiasts.

He could likely talk to someone like DC power and get a dual alt bracket.... just put a standard 4 prong oval gm alt as the second alt and separate it and a bat bank just for the system. One thing I've learned.... doing electrical properly is almost as expensive as the subs/amps its powering.

You never know, those Cruzes may have the same setup as a Malibu or an Impala or any other Chevy product. Email/ call some places and see what you can find out. Sometimes one good alternator can be cheaper and perform better than a whole battery bank.

I explained it to someone like this;

It is by far more important to upgrade your alternator before getting higher capacity batteries. Batteries are only a temporary fix. Think of it this way... You have a container (batteries) that holds 1000 gallons of water. You have a pipe (alternator) filling the container at 250 gallons per hour. With the flood gates (amps) wide open you let go 1500 gallons per hour. Your going to run out of water quickly with the flood gates (amps) wide open, and in an electrical sense you will be getting unhealthy voltage drops before the resovior is empty. If you bump up the water source (alternators) you solve all problems. :)

Confusing, but it works haha.

Alternator would be the best choice in the long run.

Some Companies: DC Power, Mechman.

I myself have been looking for a new alternator and came across the mechman site but have been unable to browse it because it seems to be infected with a nasty virus/spyware...

That's a pretty good analogy... :fing34:
