Hey I'm new and have some questions

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I have to say that Fi car audio has really caught my eye.. first off I will say Hi and that my name is Tyler.

With that said here is my question. I have been looking at the FI SSD 15 and I'm not sure about what ohm and stuff to get on the sub with the amp I have. I currently have a Crossfire VR602 and I need some help with picking the options on the sub ( such as Ohm: FlatwindCoil: BP Power: ). Im sure i dont need flatwindcoil or bp power as they just seem to be upgrade options.. so basically all i need to know is what ohm I should get on the sub dual 1 or dual 2.. and im sure the amp will be underpowering the sub but should it sound ok bridged?

Welcome to the Forum!! :eek5wavey:

I would highly recommend looking into another amplifier than this one. Power Acoustik, Pyle, Boss Audio, Pyramid, Legacy, DHD, etc. etc. (the list goes on and on) are all VERY cheap built brands. Reliability is spotty at best and the performance leaves much to be desired on all fronts generally speaking. If you need a budget minded brand to recommend there's Powerbass and Hifonics, although you'd be surprised at the prices you can find Sundown amps at used or refurbished. There's so many good brands out there it's hard to recommend anything without leaving ALOT of reputable names out. A good general rule to remember and follow is the old addage, "You get what you pay for." If $150 for a 3,000 watt amp sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. Do some searches around the forum, many many people have started threads in the past asking what the best amp for this or that is. It's fairly easy to deduce the brands to consider by looking at the number of times the same names come up, over and over and over again.

Save up some more and get an Audioque 1200d. I believe it's one of the best in that price range and definitely does rated plus a little. I have one powering my 15 SSD and it's perfect.

Welcome to SSA! :eek5wavey: And great choice of sub! :fing34:

Thanks for all the replies guys.. Well I guess I will stay away from that amp.. But since I will be Buying that sub no matter what. Will my vr602 be ok until i save up for a decent amp?

also would this amp be a good match for that sub http://www.amazon.com/Hifonics-HFi1000-D-Class-Mono-Amplifier/dp/B0036B8UPM ?

All the reviews on it are good and it seems to be a great amp for the price.

The crossfire will be just fine on it. Like anything else, watch your gain setting and listen carefully to be sure you're not clipping the signal. The Hifonics amp is a good step better than the Power Acoustik, but as Andrew mentioned, the Audioque 1200 would be a great amp to get for it. If you can find a used Sundown SAZ-1000 or SAE-1200 would be great as well. There's ALOT of call for amps in that power range, keep looking around the forum, you'll find the names that you can easily trust.

Heard terrible things on the Hifonics HFi series. Personally, I'd run the amp you have now until you get some more money to really buy a good amp. Don't rush things because you'll easily make a mistake and regret it in the end.

OK, I will do that for now.. just run the vr602 and watch the gain setting and listen for clipping/distortion. Also thanks for the amp suggestions. I'll look for a sundown as soon as i get the money saved up.

I'm not sure if I will get in trouble for this or not, but since i can't post in the Fs/wtb thread, I'm going to post a wtb in here

WTB: amp at a good price that will power the 15'' Fi ssd.. refurb/used is what im looking for since im kinda low on cash atm. Please let me know through Pm if you have a good reliable used or refurbed amp that would be a good match for that driver.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if Im not allowed to post a wtb in here

The crossfire will power that sub nicely, your box is going to play a huge roll in the output. You have to have a certain post count before you can post in the FS/WTB section I think its 25post or so. You shouldnt worry to much on buying an amp now just be patient an wait for good deals, when you rush into stuff you end up loosing money due to buying a crap amp then having to sell it and get something good. Honestly man you have a solid amp now to push that sub!

ok went outside and braved the 20degree weather in my boxers to get the box lol.. i forgot how heavy the damn thing was with the amp on it and the sub in it.. I would say it weighs close to 220 pounds..

Any way. I will take some pics real quick and get them up

Also with the crossfire vr602 being a 2 channel amp, what kind of wattage is it putting out bridged?

Ok instead of taking pictures i just did some measuring.

The box measures 30" Wide X 16 3/4" tall X 18 1/4" deep

The port measures 3 1/4" Wide X 15 1/8" tall

I hope this box will be sufficient as i do not want to have to buy another box.

Assuming 3/4" construction, it looks like it's 4.21 cuft gross. Which doesn't account for the space the port takes up, but all in all the box sounds like a decent match, though its impossible to say for sure without knowing the port length and tuning.

how do I measure port length, and how can I tell what it's tuned at? Also im sure its 3/4 construction as this is one Heavy a hell box!

Edit, the last sub I had in it was a Memphis M3 15, and it Hit Hard as hell

You'd have to take a tape measure and measure the length of the port walls that go into the box. With those measurements we can tell you what it's tuned to.

Inside the box, the port measures:

13 1/4" deep

and is the height of the box
