help choosing a sub/subs

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am looking to get a new subwoofer for my car. I have narrowed it down to the following based on reviews online..... All 12" speakers

FiQ, Fi SSD, ICON,

or maybe go with two DCONS or FiX's. I will have to get a box anyways, so one or two subs is an option. I have 1000watts @ 1ohm / 750 @ 2ohm to power the sub(s). I want something that will play tight, clean bass with a good kick but at the same time get a little loud if I want. Mainly rock music and hip hop, some jazz and classical. No country :)

From past expierence I prefer the sound of sealed enclosures, however I would not rule out a ported enclosure if it doesnt get muddy or boomy. Oh, budget is around 300 for sub(s).

Thanks in advance!

Jay

All options listed are very nice and all will get it done. The Q has the Xmax advantage and the pair of Dcon's/X's have the cone advantage. But is all depends on your needs.

Edit: And welcome to SSA.

Doing a ported enclosure would give you a bit more output, which would be nice since your using low power relatively :)

I'd tune around 30hz-33hz, this would give you a nice increase in output compared to a sealed box, yet still be able to play all music.

The dcons are rated at 300watts a piece, so depending on the coil config, you could run your amp at 1ohm or 2ohm, and in essence give each driver 500watts or 375watts. I've never done any testing with a dcon so I can't say whether or not it would take 500watts. Someone else will have to chime in on that.

^This would give you the cone area advantage like Aaron said above. Now on the other hand, you could use a smaller box and go with an Icon on 1000watts. I've personally owned a pair of 12" Icons and absolutely loved them. I recently heard a single 12" Icon in a trunk car and it was loud surprisingly loud considering I currently run an 18" driver :peepwall:

Reason I haven't mentioned anything about the Fi products is I haven't actually tested the Qs or Xs. Now if you ask me about the BL line... :)

And the decision grows harder...

I'd say 2 dcon's. They look like realy solid subs.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone!

With a single ICON, I assume ported would be preffered for best sound/output? I am terrible at making boxes, so I will have to purchase one from a vendor. Any recomendations? I noticed two vendors on here both sell ported boxes, do either make one that will work well with a single ICON and ported to the correct frequency?

It is starting to look like bang for buck, a single ICON in a ported enclosure will be close in price to two DCONs in a ported enclosure. Sure a single ICON wont be as loud, but considering the smaller box and same money I think that is probaby the best option.

Anyone else want to chime in on the FiQ or Fi SSD VS the ICON in a single twelve ported setup?

Oh it is a trunk car also, forgot to throw that in.

Jay,

You really are in a win win situation. All three drivers are excellent choices, they have their advantages. The Q has the most output potential, the SSD is an awesome deal, and the Icon slots right between the two. ;)

Both Argent and Khaotik can build enclosures that will work great with any of these drivers you are looking at.

:)
