i need help pickin a good h.u with good eq qualities

Recommended Posts

so i was not going to buy a head unit in the first place but now that im thinking i can probably use the features for the eq... i have been looking at the clarion vz300 and that appeals to me, but also the jensen vm9224 i dont know much about jensen and im not sure if they are a reliable brand, so some help here would be nice.. in fact i wouldnt mind suggestions for other headunits as long as they are under 250

What type of EQ features do you need? What are you trying to fix? Do you want/need parametric or graphic? How many bands and what center frequencies?

EQ is a very general and generic term. Not all EQ's are created equal. You need an EQ that will fit your needs and goals, which is more specific than just asking for an "EQ".

And one "just to play with" is always a bad idea.

Then an eq will just screw you up seriously bad. If you don't know what you need to do an EQ is NEVER the solution. In general the should be for removing anomalies, so if you know what ails your system lets start by trying to fix it without relying on processing.

Eclipse makes good ones because you get the following

1. Adjustable 10 band eq and you can save 5 different settings to the head unit.

2. Adjustable 3 way crossover.

3. Time Alignment / Time Delay.

4. Position Selection.

That is all I can remember about the sq adjustments. Now if you are running Zapco amps with their DSP then you want all the the settings on this headunit FLAT. Depending on your setup the Time Alignment/ Time Delay is still adjustable and use able on the head unit.

my bass isnt as loud as i would like it to be on my sub and i really dont like turning the bass knob on the factory HU up all the way, i simply want suggestions for a good HU that is versatile and willl help me adjust the loudness and tune my sub a bit better.

Most headunits do not at all have the flexibility you describe to adjust particular portions of the response of the sub. Usually they work on fixed frequencies as a graphic equalizer or a few parametric bands which are adjustable. If you are truly only worried about your sub then I would look for a unit that has a parametric with an adjustable frequency AND Q. Older Eclipse units fit that bill, but not much else.

However, that being said "isn't as loud" as you would like on your sub is NOT an eq problem. You should address that differently. Amp, box, drivers...

NEVER use a bass knob, terrible idea.

And for clarification, my comment on the parametric is *assuming* which I know I shouldn't do in particular with a directionless topic, that the problem you have is an anomaly in your response. The second portion of my answer is the one that will solve your problem I bet.

As I hinted and answered above, it is probably your amp, box, install....

If you truly want to improve it you should let us know as much about your system as you can.

well i took it to the local audio shop today and it just so happens the rcas were put in backwards on the amp and a couple of the wires on the hu got yanked out. (i couldnt tell the difference of the plugs on the amp because they are both black). but the subs bumpin good now, i bought the alpine cda-105 hu today and i love it, i just need to mess around a bit with it and get used to it.

If your need was truly eq the 105 doesn't really have one that helps. Obviously that wasn't your problem though :)

Technically the bass and treble ARE an EQ (a simple two band EQ).....either boosting or cutting the level at a certain set frequency. There is nothing wrong with using or experimenting with an EQ, but my theory has always been...never use it to boost, only to cut(that goes for the treble and bass knobs too). That being said, yeah if you arent happy....you need more power, better speakers, etc etc......

The only real downside to an outboard EQ is that it is another component that can add noise, and as mentioned before....can really make a system sound terrible, even destroy equipment, if used incorrectly. They are good for getting a "flat" response, but that might not always be the best "sounding" configuration....everyone's ears are different...

yeah the eq isnt that great but just the hu alone has made a huge difference.
