2 10" Ported, 2 12" Sealed, or 1 15" Ported?? - 2010 ICONS

  1. 1. Which should I use?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Just registered up for the forum today, seems to be all great people here, and that is why I’m coming to you guys for some help.

To get straight to the point I will describe my situation.

Vehicle: 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

This vehicle does have a fair size trunk, well for the size of the car. The only thing that is really keeping me back from doing what I want [2 12" Ported] is the trunk opening. As of now I have 2 Rockford Fosgate Punch P2's in a sealed 2ft^3 box. I have a 4ft^3 slot ported box tuned to 31.5Hz made for these woofers, which I used in a previous vehicle, but this box will not fit in the Ralliart. So first things first: I can not fit anything 4ft^3 or bigger. . What I want out of my system is a good output, with great quality. I know it is a lot to ask for because everyone wants it, but I think the ICONS can give me just what I am looking for. The only thing is, I’m having trouble figuring out which would be better. The 15” was my first choice. To be honest my first choice was the 15” Fi Q. Which, from what I hear is a good woofer no doubt. But then when compared the ICON to the Q, I came to the conclusion on the ICON. Mostly for its ability to hit the lows better and clearer (from what people have said on other forums) and its overall better SQ.

So if at all possible, please throw down some comments, opinions, etc. It’ll all go towards helping make my decision. Oh, and please put an entry in on the poll :).

Thanks for your time

Matt

Post your vehicles max dimensions that way we have something to work with.

Edit, didn't vote on the poll because it doesn't work like that... Enclosure volume will play a big roll in output.

I understand that the enclosure plays a massive part in output. I probably should have said this earlier but the boxes for the woofers will all most likely be around 3ft^3.

Below is the max dimensions for my trunk. Please let me know if I missed anything!

Width: 38" left to right (between wells)

Length: 33" back to front

Height: 18" top to floor

Opening: trunkopening.jpg

The 17" is the trunk opening, as if you took a tape and measured from the top of the trunk (weather stripping) to the weather stripping by the rear bumper. The vertical 12" is from the top of the trunk (weather stripping) to where it intersects the horizontal 12" is from the trunk opening from the bumper. I think from the weather stripping to the floor was 20"

Do the rear seats fold down? If so what's the opening dimensions from that?

Did you look in the tech section on the home page?Will any of those work?

The rear seats fold do fold down. But i do not want to lose my rear seats. If I am taking this wrong please let me know. It is the very first time someone has asked me if they fold down. I want the box to be restricted to the trunk only.

As for looking at the tech section, yes I have. I have practically studied the box sizes for all the woofer combinations I am asking about and it seems that they will all fit. The only thing left to do is to actually make mock boxes from say cardboard or something and see if they fit in. Without crippling the cardboard of course, and I will be doing this, hopefully soon, if so tomorrow.

he was wondering if the opening (behind your rear seats) is big enough to fit/slide the box through

Ohhh. Knew I was going to think it was something else haha. My bad. There is no way in hell a box of any caliber will fit through the back of the seats. Maybe a 1ft^3 but that is it. Believe me I tried everything trying to fit my 4ft^3 in.

Budget is not the greatest b/c i am is university but stuff will be getting done. It just takes time for me to save up money.

Power, as of now I have a Hifonics ZXI6410 680 watt 4 channel amp which will be running my components active just after Christmas.

  • If I get the 1 ICON (would be the 15" Dual 1), it will be running off, most likely, a Hifonics BRZ1700.1D (1700 watts -> 1ohm, 1200 watts -> 2 ohm, 600 watts -> 4ohm) at 2 ohm.
  • If I get 2 Icons (either the 12" or 10" Dual 1), it will be running off, most likely again, a Hifonics BRZ2100.1D (2100 watts -> 1 ohm, 1400 watts -> 2 ohm, 700 watts -> 4 ohm) at 1 ohm.

My electrical is a 120 Amp alternator (stock and will be being replaced if needed, most likely though), Big III upgrade this weekend. 4 Awg wiring for P & G. Upgrade to 0 Awg once I purchase an amp.

Anything I miss?

My max dimensions when I put down my seats is 24" (Width) x 17" (Height).

Often you can get a bigger opening by removing the back seat temporarily to get the folding frame out of the way.

Welcome to the forum. Have you thought about getting a single Xcon 12 put into a custom ported enclosure and a nice size amp to push it. You would get great sound and it will get loud.

The folding frame reduces the rear interior opening no doubt. But, now this is just by eyeballing, i think the interior opening is smaller then the actual trunk hatch opening so I think that if it can fit through the seats, it will surely fit through the hatch. But maybe not. Im sure it will be worth the look though.

I have thought about an Xcon, this morning actually is when I truly researched into it a bit. I looked at the dimensions for the 12" and I think it might fit as is. If not I could always adjust it a bit.

OMG.

This makes me so happy. Someone who is new doing research, using proper grammar, and mathematical now-how.

Yeah, go for 1 15" in a 3.5ft^3. Fi BL or an xcon or an icon. Sub is up to you.

Just looked into the BL, seems like a solid option. So as of now, I think I'm gonna be choosing between 1 15" either the SSA Icon, or the Fi BL. Maybe the Xcon but its a chunk of change that I just do not have. Plus I only want to run about another 1000 watts for now.

I have also taken out my rear seats back rest. I got some extra room for sliding a box through when I took away the folding frame. Seems to me that I may be able to fit a bigger box in then I thought. I actually almost got my 4 ft^3 ported box in. The only reason why I never is because there is 2 bolts that my seat mount to are pretty much in the middle. It rose the box up about 3/4" and therefore, the box did not fit. :( My new fold down dimensions are same width of 24" but now a height of 15.5" (to be safe).

Anyone have any other recommendations for what I should do (2 10's, 1 15, etc.), subs, amps, electrical?

1 xcon would be cheaper than 2 Icons, and I can tell you the Xcon plays very well on 1000 watts. I did it!

You can upgrade your amp lately. But the Hifonics you want is enough ( 1700 at 1 ohm ?).

You're on the right track ! (Except for the HF amps !!!)

Good luck. :)

Hifonics amps not a good buy? I got a Zeus 680x4 RMS at the moment and I am actually impressed with it, but then again, I have not heard any sundowns or zapcos or anything so it gets hard to tell what is good and what is not. I will have to look into some different amps, which I had planned to do either way. Thanks for the help :)

Alright, so this is what I came up with over the past while and I think this box will fit. The box is made for a 15" Fi BL D1, the box is 3.209ft^3 tuned to 27.4Hz.

The external dimensions without port are as follows:

L = 28", H = 18.5", D = 15".

The external dimensions with port are as follows:

L = 32", H = 18.5", D = 19.75".

The port dimensions are as follows:

W = 3.25", Front to Back = 15.75", Right to Left = 24".

The internal dimensions are as follows:

W = 26.5", H = 17", D = 13.5".

Criticism welcome! :)

Why do you want to tune so low ? You will loose output. Are you sure you want that ?

32Hz should be good : enough low end and enough output.
