Something is screwed up

Recommended Posts

on my way home last night i noticed that 1 of my 4 sets of comps wasn't working. so i was getting no volume out of the tweeter or the mid bass. I quickly realized it was channel 3 (front right).

here is what i did:

First I checked the resistance of the speakers and i got an ohm reading of 4ohm each speaker (mid/high)

• so this tells me that the speakers are fine

Second I check the output of the amp by putting my dmm in voltages A/C

• I then compared the output of the channel 3 with the other channels and i got the same amount of output on all channels

• so this ruled out my amp as an issue

Next i put the dmm in ohm, and check the wires going into the amp leading to the crossover, on the amp end (trunk), and my dmm read OL (overload or open?)

• I compared that reading with the rearing of the other wires and the other wires rear 4ohms +/- 0.3ohm

so this leads me to believe there is an issue with the main run of wire for channel 3 (front right speaker) or the crossover is done for?

what do you guys think? pull the wire out and run a new run go from there? or is there a way to rule out the crossover as the issue?

see i kind a think it is an issue with the crossover b/c that speaker just for some reason cut out and my wiring is all neat and tidy and tucked away free from a spot that could cut it open but then again the crossovers... how many times do those go bad right?

here is the comps i am using Zapco RB 13.2

any more info you guys need let me know any more trouble shooting idea's let me know also

thanks for your time

Kenneth

Sounds like an issue with the passive crossover. Check output at the Crossover. Most likely one the components in the crossover failed.

to rule out wiring, take a Xover from another set and put it in place of the questionable one. if it works it's the Xover and not the wire.

crap crossovers are expensive lol.

now how do i go about checking the output of the crossover?

pop the dmm into a/c volts and see if i have an output? also should i maybe just run a dummy wire from front to back to elimate the wire being an issue?

More than likely you can measure the output on the crossover in ohms.

You could take a small AAA battery and check to see if you get a sound out of the mid & tweet.

some good news!

well today i just ran some wire from the amp to the crossover and guess what it works now! so the wire must be cut somewhere.

considering that that wire was the first wire i ever ran in my car a good 3-4years ago i got some good use out of it lol! o well at least the fix isn't going to cost me anything now! but i know replacing the wire will be hell b/c it is getting cold out and running new 16gauge wire under everything is always fun! if i find the break i will post a pic of it!

thanks everyone for your help!
