supporting a 2000d (electrical)

Recommended Posts

I finally got my saz2000d and 4 - sa-8's installed today.

You can see my build log on this forum if you like.

This is in a 2000 ford ranger.

I've installed a db electrical 200 amp alt.

I've run a 1/0 cable from the alternator to the battery.

I was planning on replacing the battery in the truck soon, when it went bad I bought the cheapo 500 cca for $35.00 about a year ago.

I have 4 - runs of 1/0 flex cable from the battery to the rear of the truck.

2 of those runs (pos./neg.) are for the 2000d.

The 4 sa8's are ( coils in series ) woofers parallel to amp. 1 ohm.

3.2 c.f. (net) enclosure tuned to 32 hertz.

My problem is the amp goes into protection when there's a quick/short bass note (music) not when a long note (bass mechanic or etc.).

I didn't get a voltage reading at the amp, but I know it's dropping low.

I also have a jl 300/2 running my front speakers, which should shut down at 10-10.5 volts. So I don't believe it's getting that low.

I have to fix one of the leads on my volt meter tomorrow so I can check the voltage at the amp and I'll post back.

When listening to music the amp will shut down and the bass isn't even loud yet, my eclipse 88120 dvc off a jl 500/1 is way louder than the sa8/2000d.

When I put in bass mechanic the volt gauge drops but the sub's/amp continues to play.

I don't under stand this.

i don't mean to insult you but how did you set your gains? also do you have a clamp meter? maybe your subs impedance (resistance) is dropping way to low...

check that your gains aren't to high, ur grouds are good but more importantly get a bigger battery.

I don't believe I have the wiring wrong, but I'll check again tomorrow.

I'm sure i need a better battery than the one I have.

I played a 50 hertz tone, adjusted the gain to ~45 volts.

I then set the sub/infrasonic to 32 volts playing a 30 hertz tone, then played a 68 hertz tone and set the voltage to 32 volts again.

At this point the subs barely moved with the bass mechanic cd playing "music".

Knowing that this is (more or less a guideline, and music is dynamic) I put in a steely dan cd that I'm familiar with ang adjusted the gain (up) from there.

The thing that gets me is that it's not low voltage that seems to be the problem.

A test tone will make the voltage gauge drop allot, but the amp keeps playing.

I don't want to hurt the amp with low voltage supply, so now I'm bassless.

Maybe it's the static ohm load, I'll check tomorrow, but I don't know.

I ran a small jumper from + to - on one coil of each speaker and connected the other coil to wires to 2 bolts mounted through the box, then to the amp.

Kind hard to screw up, but I'll double check and post the final dc resistance to the amp.

Thanks to all who have responded.

I've been looking to see which battery I can fit under my hood, I think the d6500 is doable.

I'd hate to spend $300.00 and find out I still have the same problem.

I am leaning towards wiring also. Check it with a DMM at the amp.

It's easy to do and I am damn sure we have all done it before, I know I have. When I wired too low in the past my amps would cut off immediately when I put some volume on them. Sounds a lot like what you have now.

Definitely get a nice battery. You should be good to go with a nice bat and the HO alt.

So I've got 2 for ohm load so far.

The battery will happen soon regardless.

ummm interesting issue... have you check the rca from the h/u like the voltage of them?

also maybe turn the gains down some just for kicks and see what happens if the amp still goes into protect

and before you turn it down pencil in where they are not (where you set them with a dmm)

I checked the DC RESISTANCE of 4 - sa8's this morning ( 4- D2 ohm, each subs coils in series with a 2" jumper wire, all 4 subs in parallel of the other coil) , my meter reads .6-.7 with 1 wire from the amp removed from the box terminals.

I believe they are wired correctly. I may pull each one out and measure each coil individually tomorrow.

I looked back at the presale thread and Jacob lists the DCR of a D2 sa8 in series at 3.28 (1.6 each).

My meter could be off a little, they should read .8 total by the info in the presale thread.

Your thoughts ?

SON-OF-A.........I just read what I wrote. I am only wired to half of the coils!!!!!!! :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa:

I really hate to admit when I screw up, but I'll own up to my mistakes!

Somebody check me, to make sure. The coil on the left has a jumper, the coil on the right connected to the amp. Wouldn't that be a .5 ohm load? If it is why does my meter read .6-.7 DCR? :ughdunno::WTFBubble::ughdunno::WTFBubble::ughdunno::WTFBubble:

Well, it's confirmed. I'm an idiot, somebody drive over here and give me a "Gibs" (ncis) slap on the back of my head.

I pulled the woofers out and wired both coils properly this time. :noob:

The amp didn't go into protection, but I listened to 2 tracks from Billy Joel and one sa8 started rattling.

I pulled it out and found the spider had broken loose. :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa: :suicide-santa:

I'll look back at the thread Jacob stated to fill the outside land with epoxy due to this issue.

I might as well do all 4 now rather than later.

I checked all 8 coils when I had them out, 4 coils measured 1.7 dcr and 4 measured 1.8 dcr.

Thanks for the replies everybody!!

your fine...not all coils are perfect.

Ha Ha dont sweat it bro.

Only people who have never wired a sub wrong are liars or someone who has never wired a sub.

I'll make this short. A long time ago in my brothers mustang, I bought him a Kicker xs50 and 4 - 8" comp vr's (dual 2 ohm) , I did the same thing, but the spring terminals are 90* apart on the vr's.

I believe there was consumption of alcohol involved that at that time. :drink40: :drink40: :drink40:

I watched the video on strengthening the spider landing a few minutes ago.

If the spider has already broken loose, should I epoxy the bottom of the spider first then fill in the top roll?

I believe that's what I'll end up doing, unless I'm told otherwise.

I epoxied the one spider back down, then epoxied the top (suggested reinforcement) and will reinstall them all tomorrow.

I hope that was the last if the "issues" I'll have with this setup. :peepwall:

let it set longer wait two days

Personal experience or because of the spider that came loose?

Just curious.

I'm listening to some mid bass speakers today so I'm not in any big rush anyway.

i remember reading on this forum about a guy who didn't let the epoxy set long enough aka less then a full day and then about 30mins it popped off again due to it not SETTING long enough.

i wish i could recall who it was... someone with an Fi sub and sundown amps that is all i can remember. other then that what is one more day right..? lol hell you got killer mid basses i bet!

Thanks fro the info. I'll wait to install them.

As for the mid bass, no not killer, yet.

Hopefully soon.

I waiting to see how J-roadtatts doors are coming, Epic killer mid bass in his car!
