Is it worth building a new box?

Recommended Posts

I'm running an Fi BL 15 on a sundown sae-1200d in a scion tc. Bought a prefab box for it a couple of months ago but im looking to get my system as loud as possible (currently upgrading electrical as well). The box seems to be tuned around maybe 50hz or so, as in Young jeezy's song "white girl" (i believe it has a 30hz note and a 50hz note) and the 50hz one hits way harder than the 30. If i built a new box, and tuned it to around 33hz, in that song it would be the other way around having the 30hz note be the louder one correct? Heres the box that I have now: http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/1833/img2746u.jpg How much would it cost roughly to build a new box like this (slightly bigger and only one port), as im on a tight budget right now, and is it really worth it, making a big difference?

please do yourself a favor...DO IT! it is a huge difference...if u build it yourself it costs less than 75 bucks (depending on mdf prices in your area). make sure u do it right tho.

I'd say go for it! It's fun if you do it yourself or have somebody help you!

Each sheet of MDF where I'm from costs about 30 dollars. I just built a 6^3 box with my baffle doubled and used 1.5 sheets, so of course 2 full sheets which is $60.

The Titebond wood glue is about $6-$8.

The screws, I used drywall screws which were I think $8.

Then carpet or spray paint if your cheap like me, even though I like how the spray paint looks. lol but I think you'll definately see a huge gain in output from your sub! Go for it!

I think i just might do this then, it should be kind of fun to do as well for sure. Yeah I've got a can of black spray paint left after painting my rims, so i'll just make it black. I guess the process is not expensive as I thought it would be too, thanks. And yes phi, i agree hahah

Custom box all the way! Then you could use the left over wood to build a nice little amp rack so everything looks nice and clean. Building boxes is fun too!

I would suggest you get a sealer to it first if you are using MDF because MDF is really porous so it will take a lot of coats if you don't seal it. And I cannot believe you could stand the sound of 50hz tuning with those noise inducing little ass ports.

I can't see the pic because of restriction at work !! (it says "pornography" !!!).

Get a design on the ssa technical section, or on the ssa store. I think they have box designed with 32 Hz tuning : you'll love them.

If you have some more money, you can contact Argent Audio, they make really good looking boxes !

Wow those are some tiny ports. Definitely get a custom made enclosure.

Wow, $180. For that price or close to it you could probably have bought a very nice custom built enclosure from any of the fabricators on here. I would suggest, if you can live without bass for a little while, selling the box you have now to recoupe some of your money in it, put that with the money you were planning on spending on a new enclosure and buying an enclosure from Khaotic, Argent or any one of those and you'll be much better off. Building your own is a good experience, but without some basic fabrication experience and some decent tools it's harder to build something that will last with what you have. Sell the box you have and buy a good custom built one is my recommendation to you.
