What belt are you running with your HO alt?

Just curious what all of you guys are running as far as engine belts with your HO alt? I'm running a new stock GM one now, thinking of getting a gates belt...

Gates Green stripe.

As long as the belt you have isn't slipping you should be good until the next belt change.

check for belt dust on your pulley.

Never heard of that?

Sometimes you get slips that you won't hear. So that's a way to check to tell.

I took a look a bit ago. I couldn't peel the belt back at all in order to see the pulley (and the pulley is black..). However I did notice on the front of the alternator itself, under the pulley there is now black 'dust' there. I wiped it off, guess I'll see if it comes back?

That would be belt dust. It will come back. Either tighten your belt up or get a new shorter belt

That would be belt dust. It will come back. Either tighten your belt up or get a new shorter belt

Thanks Kyle. I was planning on calling you (again) later this week to ask about it. I also notice a squeal from the engine accelerating to 50mph then letting off the gas.

Mine had 50k miles on it. Figured it'd be good to replace it...

The best rule of thumb is get a couple belts and get the one that barely fits on.. that way you have the best amount of tension. Then you can take a socket and put it into the pulley nut. Then from there, while having the belt on the pulley "tighten" the nut and you should see the belt go with the pulley. If the pulley is moving and the belt is staying in one location then you still have belt slip. Long term belt slip can also "glaze" a pulley and will require a new pulley.

Had a belt snap on me that was "too" tight, buddy thought he happened to have the right one for my Sentra back in the day. It snapped during installation so I am assuming if you managed to install a belt that is "too" tight then it would snap pretty much on first go around.
