putting sub in box. what kind of screws?

Recommended Posts

Can i use 2 1/2 dry wall screws to mount my sub in the box? Does it matter what line driver you use? Last question, will any RCA's work, if there cheap or not?

2-1/2" is kind of long but they will work. if you are using a large sub you might want to find a screw that is a little more heavy duty such as a deck screw

line drivers are optional equipment. like anything else, you get what you pay for so if you use one, id stick with a known brand and operate it preoperly

any rcas will work to transfer the signal. the question is how much noise will they pick up along the way. some cars tend to have more noise than others, and how you run the wires also plays a role. all that said, a good pair of shielded twisted pair rcas will reduce the chance for noise. that doesnt mean you need $200 rcas, but splurge a little bit for some quality cables.

For screws I usually use either a 1 and 1/4" or 1 and 1/2" #8 wood screw. The threads tend to be tighter/closer together (more winds) than a drywall screw which gives you more surface holding the screw in. If your enclosure is made of MDF remember to pre-drill your holes (slightly thinner than the screw) otherwise you will split the wood and compromise it's integrety.

I personally have never used a line driver. But if you absolutely want to have one, like said above, stick with something tried tested and true, for your peace of mind.

Again, for RCA's, a decent pair of twisted or shielded can make all the difference in the world, depending on ambient noise in the vehicle, as well as where they are run. I generally try to run my RCA's on the opposite side of the vehicle from any power wires. Personally I am running Streetwirs LN2 series rca's they are braided. I have two runs of them (one for mid/high amp, one for sub amp) and they cost me $20 each. I wouldn't suggest buying anything too expensive though.

I would never use anything that doesn't have a flat back to the screw head. Deck and drywall screws don't cut it as far as I'm concerned. Those are for building boxes. Sheetmetal screws are much better for mounting speakers. They have more contact area on the speaker frame and you aren't going to distort the frame when you tighten it down.

I use bolts and T-nuts to secure large woofers.

RCA's don't pick up interference as well.
