Fi Sssd 18" box size limitations - help evryone

Recommended Posts

Hi all, one of my friend just bought a new 18"ssd with Flat wind and Bp power. he wanted to achieve maximum spl with minimum power so a bigger sub was chosen.

Now, he has a blaupunkt vpa1500pro amplifier which puts out 950 Rms @ 2ohms and 1500@ 1 ohms. As the sub is dual 1ohms, he will be wiring it at 2ohms for a clean 950rms output.

Now the problem starts, the car boot is limited to 4.5cufeet of space at maximum, the idea was to go for a ported box but as recommended by FI on this forum first few topics, atleast 6cufeet is needed for a SSD . And that's true due to its lesser powerful motor compared to Btl's or SMD's which can be used in 4.5 cufeet ported boxes.

Round port is to be used - 4" or 5" , whatever the 18"SSd owners recommend.

plan was to achieve loudness for street bass. so guys what would you recommend the tuning frequency ? I had in mind a target of 32-33hz but it seems outta range now.

Now we all know of a magical stuff - poly-fill !! But i don't know if poly-fill works in ported enclosers or not. again plz answer this too.

So what say guys, 4.5cufeet , target ported box only. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Shoulda measured up before getting that 18. You should probably know that bigger size sub doesn't always mean more SPL. And that is 6 cuft NET not gross.

well that is true that bigger sub not necessarily means more spl, many other factors comes nto play too, but we are not discussing that here now .

Also when budget is very limited, power is limited , and only one sub is to be used.. 18" sub make sense.

Any help regarding the query will be appreciative.

Thanks

If budget was the problem then I would have spent more on design and testing instead of equipment. Placement and design are way more important than equipment let alone sub size. Now that you actually have too small of a space, you have no room to try different orientations of sub/port and box.

For Fi's subs, you shouldn't go out of the range of recommendations much at all.

The best suggestion is to try whatever size box you can fit and see how it sounds. It looks like you would need a 6" aeroport at least to not have port noise.

Or

Just tell your friend he made the wrong choice and now he has to sell the 18" SSD and get a smaller sized sub.

To stay within the same price as the 18" SSD, you could have gotten 2 15" Xs and sealed them or 2 12" Xs and ported them. That would have been better for your space. Really, I would have gone with a single 12" sub. But that's just me.

you guys kinda messed up, should measured and figured out your volume before buying the biggest thing you can. Now if you did a sealed box, 4.5cubes would fall into recommended specs ;)

But whether using a sealed box (fair amount of output loss compared to PROPER ported enclosure) vs a small ported enclosure, I don't know which will have more output.

But I will leave you with that thought :peepwall:

O yeah, I forgot. You could go sealed with that 18 as well.

sell it or recone it to a 15".

an 18" sub might be louder than a 15" sub. but that doesnt mean shit if you cant fit it in the car.

so how much volume is recommended for a sealed box?

Is really that difficult for you to visit ficaraudio.com and look it up...Sealed box: 3.5-5 cuft

well the topic reads some goals that need to be achieved so its better to ask SSD users for realistic and experienced recommendations..

why so much anger? i am here for some help on behalf of my friend , if you can't , atleast don't spoil it too.

I apologize for being rude, I understand your thinking but who would be more experienced then the manufacturer?

What vehicle is this going in?
