what sub, amp power, and box size and tuning? You may be bottoming it out. Do you hear this pop when the sub is extended really far inward?

more than likely bottoming out. it doesn't take a lot of power to bottom out a sub free aired.

is it on the lower notes where the subs movin alot or higher notes where theres minimal excursion? or both? i'm guessing this sub is used right? well it could be several different things and its hard to figure out some sub problems. i know i had problems with my power hx2 15 makings noises on higher notes 40hz+ that was like a rattle/pop and i'm still not completely sure but i think i got it too hot when i got my saz1500. getting them to hot b4 they break in causes the v.c. de-form and cause some coil rub. once i got my gain, ssf, and hpf set it bangs fine with no noises.

i wouldnt free air it anymore if i were you i'd wait till i get a box and see how she acts then

What amp are you sing to power this sub?

How do you have it wired, series or parallel?

It's not a JL is it?

im doing the box as we speak. just started an hour ago but its hotter than balls outside. i tested it on a hifonics brutis at 1 ohm had the sub wired at 1 ohm then tried it at 4 ohms and it still did the noise. did each coil seperate still did it.. i went to the re dealer here in louisville ky and he said put it in the box and it should be ok if not he will send it in for me ill post pics when im done with the box should be around 6 or 7

Does the sub have a vented pole piece? Are you playing it free air sitting flat on a surface? If it does have a vented pole, you shouldn't play it free air laying flat on its backplate because the ground then plugs the pole piece, and the air that is supposed to flow out the pole can't anymore, so it goes up and gets pushed out somewhere else. This can make a popping noise.

But in your other thread you mentioned that it had a bad coil. Did the previous owner tell you it did? If so, it probably does and it probably does just need a recone. Having DCR readings above the nominal impedance is unusual. There seems to be something amiss.

The reason I asked if it was a JL amp (slash series) is because mine had an issue playing a eclipse 88120 dvc in a sealed enclosure @2 ohms.

The low ohm light would flicker on for a split second and there was a popping noise coming from the sub when this occurred.

I noticed it one day with the car in the garage (dark) while I was doing some tuning.
