If doing the Big 3 is an issue for you then get someone to do it for you, it may $40 or more but at least it wont be a hindrance to you getting a better system installed in your car. Buy the materials to get it done and find someone to do the labor for you. At least do the grounds if you can (engine block to chassis and battery to chassis) and get someone to do battery positive to alternator positive.

i tried...one audio shop said it wouldn't touch it and another said it could be an all-day project and couldn't give me a quote on it.

What kind of car? sorry if you already said it.

it's a 2000 ford taurus with a 130 amp alternator, but the alternator is buried under the engine and barely visible

Sounds like that shop is TOO lazy.

You can access it from under the car behind the engine. you could do it if you tried i think.

yeah put it on jack stands or ramps would work fine. something to make sure your safe under there :peepwall:

if i stuck with type r's which would be louder, 2 12" current gen for 1200w rms or 3 10" last gen for 1500w rms?

Unless someone else has done the exact comparison, with the same tone in the same car, nobody is gonna know. usually cone area wins but not always.

Three 10's have slightly more cone area, more motor force, and more coil for heat dissipation. But will not have a normal impedance load on your amplifier, make sure of that.

lol i know. i just got 2 kicker cvx 12's with a ported box for $300. those will out bump type r's any day
