Just window shopping... sub opitions for my amp

Recommended Posts

Hey just doing some window shopping looking for opitions for my amp hoping to ad Fi to my list I'm not looking to buy soon and I know alot can change in a company's line-up over a year but I treat car audio like my version of a fantiacy football league and I'll do builds in my head waiting to hit the lottery or my kids to graduate so I can have more toys...

How I like my bass... Loud, Low, & Clean as posible

I listen to just about everything but mostly rock and rap

Car... not positive leaning toward a smaller hatchback like a honda civic or mini cooper, either way the space required for humans can be limited to the front seats and enough room for a suitcase for the weekend it will basicly be a toy daily drivin and most likely not go to many compitions.

Past subs: Hollywood (2 - 10"), Kicker Impulse (2 -12"), Rockford Fosgate Series 1 (2 - 12"), Kicker SoloBaric (1 - 12"), SoundStream SPL (2 -12"), JL audio 10w6 (3 - 10"), Kicker XPL (4 -12")

Last used & current owned sub: Rockford Fosgate Power T1 ( 1 -12") housed in a 3cu. ft. ported box @37Hz in a 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Amp: Mmats D200HC 1200wRMSx1 @1ohm.... but as tested by CA&E the year I bought it puts out 1325w @1ohm @ 12.5v

I had origanlly bought 2 T1's and had them in a sealed box (had never owned a ported box) but wasn't really impressed with them. Not wanting to give up all my trunk space at the time I ported just one of them... WOW!!! So much of a difference I sold 1 of them. But only running 1- T1 only gives me a 2ohm load so I'm not using my amp to it's full potential (only pushing about 900w) which is why I'm looking at subs.

So would any one here be able to compair Fi's to the Rockford Power line?

I've decided if I'm going with a single sub I want to go larger so a 15" it is unless an 18" can keep up and not sound like ass when playing rock (Metallica fan) and if I would have enough space for such a HUGE box.

I'm Guessing the BL line is what I should be looking at? I like the stoutness of the BTL's but I'm worried about not having enough power since thier RMS is 2000w. I've seen people kill good subs trying to push a amp when they didn't have enough power for a sub and it started clipping. Is there a max power rating for the BL's?

Opinions, Comments, need more info?

Look at the Fi SSD's. They match up well with your amp, have good output, and will give you some nice thump in a ported box.

Fi > RF X's 10

Take pics of your build or dont come back. LOL :P

18's can play the same notes as 15's or 12's or 8's, etc...

Can you describe your goals a little more?

So far the suggestion of a pair of SSD 12s is great, or maybe a single larger BL.

Well if you want to get louder on the same amount of power, then go for biggest cone area that you can fit with optimal volume.

so how much volume do you have to work with?

If you can't fit an 18" within optimal specs then a 15" would be better.

Is space an issue for you?

I'd say my threemain goals are 1) making an over-all well rounded sounding system ( classical you should be able to tell what it is, in rock you can hear the different bass notes ,it doesn't blure together into one big blob of bass, kinda like its my own private concert, and yet deep pounding bass for rap/ r&b like I would get going clubing) 2) use the power my sub amp has as best as possible to be just plain loud 3) not spend $400-$500 per sub if possible

the subs I've owned I like the best have been:

3 JL 10w6's sealed box, which sounded amazing but lagged on the low in a bit being 10" (were on a 500w SoundStream amp way underpowered)

3 Kicker XPL 12" sealed box, I really like them even over the JL's mainly because of their low end (but da... 10" vs 12") the main problem I had with them was failure, I was running them on my mmats amp and it literally beat them apart cones seperated from the voicecoils

1 Rockford Fosgate Power T1 12" ported pre-made box made to RF optimal specs, the volume of sound and lows it can hit WOW and it's taken a daily driver beating... but I'm not using all my amps' power, had been thinking of looking for a used T2 but I would rather have a sub loud like this one but a little more musical like the others.

as far as how much room I have for a sub... I haven't set myself on a specific car yet though I'm looking toward a small two door hatchback like a mini couper and anything behind the front seats is far game though if possible I would lke to be able to see out the rear window... sometime soon I'm going to drive around to car lots with my tapemeasure to see how a big box will fit (can't wait to see the look on the salesmen face) having a hard time picturing what a 5-8cu.ft. box in the back of a small car looks like
