Great lookin setup!!! Amps look really clean and with the subs hovering above them that is sweet! Kudos to the cool tool, Nut Riveter, that would be very handy! :fing34:

Hugo, to me it sounds really clean, and they get plenty low from when I heard it at the HW. I am surprised though about the impedance numbers you recorded. They are waaay too high. Have you tried checking the impedance on the voice coils with a dmm to make sure they are 4 ohms or near it? If they are, then my best guess would be the environment the subs are in.

Hope you get this issue resolved. Upgrading from 15" subs to 18" subs and doubling the power should NOT result in a 2-3db drop in output.

The subs are 4ohm. As for the impedance, that's just the way the cookie crumbles when using home audio subs in a car. :P

Lol! Since it was a 3x event I wonder if I'll get an invite to world finals. :)

I guess... I have no experience with IB setups or subs whatsoever...

So are you going to stay with the setup? It sounded very precise to me when I heard it.

Anymore updates to the Creampuff Hugo?

It sounded great when I heard it yall, sound-quality wise the subs blended in perfectly with the music, he gave me quite a range of music to listen to and it sounded great on all of it! Somehow it creates the illusion of midbass coming from directly in front of you as well, I thought he had 6.5s hidden in his dash I was surprised when he told me they were only 3.5s!

+1 on the impedence curve issue, Im thinking about going this route...and if I can equalize this impedence curve with say a 2ohm sub then that would be ideal.

E-mail Fi about using these subs in a car. In another thread Fi mentions the possibility of using a different coil to combat too much rise in the impedance curve. See HERE. :)

First, thanks to everyone for the positive support. To all those who have heard the system and have taken the time to chime in with positive words, thank you.

UPDATES! Fi nally. :)

The sound system is doing fine. The subs are fully broken in. I'm metering around 134ish around 21Hz. Next on the things to do list is upgrade the SQ a bit. What better way to do that than throw some money at the problem. I'm going to take a different approach than what everyone is used to around here. Since my fiber glassing skills are non-existent that puts those high end Focals back on the shelf. I'm going to use electronic processing to make my Powerbass and MTX mids and highs sound like angels singing. What better processor to use than one of these:

A little packaging action.

DSC02196.jpg

To add to the custom feel I had JBL color match all of there production MS8 processors to match General Motor's metallic silver color used on 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra's. :P Not really. That's how they come. Lucky me. :)

DSC02198.jpg

Power and input shot. This unit accepts both high and low level inputs.

DSC02200.jpg

Outputs. This unit also has a built in amp that'll shoot out 18 watts at 4 ohm and 30 watts at 2 ohms. Nice.

DSC02199.jpg

These headphones are actually the microphone. During the setup you sit in the listening position wearing these while the processor plays tones to evaluate the acoustical environment and make necessary adjustment.

DSC02197.jpg

Adjustments are made via this little screen and remote.

DSC02201.jpg

Stay tuned for the install. :)

I would love to be able to hear an IB setup like this. The whole IB thing is pretty cool and I would like to know what it sounds like. Kudos on doing something different, and excellent craftsmanship. Keep up the great work and good luck with future endeavors.

Finally got a little bit of free time Saturday afternoon. I did a mad thrash to get this in for a little get together with some pals.

Here is a mock up shot. I'm taking out the amps powering the inside speakers and using the amp built in the MS8 to power them instead.

DSC02219.jpg

It wouldn't be a mad thrash with out a little south Texas rain in the mix. I had to move the whole operation into the garage. :)

DSC02220.jpg

With the amps out and the MS8 in place it was just a matter of wiring things up.

DSC02221.jpg

Here is the finished product.

DSC02223.jpg

The setup is pretty straight forward. First is the sub. It'll ask how many outputs you're going to use. Then you'll set a subsonic filter frequency, then a subsonic filter slope. After that you'll set the low pass crossover frequency and slope. Then you'll setup the front, center if applicable and rear speakers in similar fashion. From there you'll assign which output will run what speaker. After that you'll calibrate the system with the groovy headphone/microphones. A quick tone will play from each speaker. You'll do this for all the seating positions you'll want to setup. I did the driver and passenger.

The sound? Pretty impressive. I finally got a decent center stage. Mind you I'm running 3-1/2" co-ax in the stock/dash location. My problem has been the the gauge cluster blocks the driver's side speaker, focusing the sound directly to my left ear. Another issue the MS8 solved is my rear fill. Before the rear speakers overpowered the front stage. Now the rear speakers come in softly.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with what the MS8 has been able to do with my setup. I can't wait to step up to a proper front stage. (wink, wink) Guess what's next.

Viva la old school. :)

DSC01365.jpg

Peace.

This is pretty cool.

I wish I had a camera when I did my install in my 91 W-body. I spent over a year just chasing minute leaks through the deck and rear bulk head area. I went so far as to cut bracing to weld holes shut, then re-weld the bracing. It was nuts, but once completed, nothing compared.

It sounds like some effort. It's hard to get any appreciation for an IB install, there's more to it than just a baffle. Thanks.

How "ballsy" is that MS8 as far as loudness?

It's only 18 watts. It'll get loud, but I clip the signal before the loudness gets unbearable. I'll be going back to real amps when I get the fronts upgraded. :)

Lookin' badass as usual Monte. I have true envy for your MS-8.:P Where did you mount the MS-8 screen? Looking forward to more thoughts and input on the MS-8, keep us informed.

In the spirit of Halloween I am resurrecting this thread from the dead. Muahahahah!!!!

The MS8 has been incredible. Best purchase period. It's time to step it up a notch. Time to add some mid-bass to the system. My poor 18s are crossed at 250Hz because my little Powerbass 3-1/2 co-ax just can't dig any deeper. :(

I have gone with el-cheapo, Peerless made, Miller & Kreisel 8 incher from the Parts Express Buy Out bin. :)

A little woofer porn

The junk in the trunk shot

DSC02228.jpg

Since I can't leave well enough alone I am going to flex my muscles and yank off the bucking magnet to reduce the mounting depth by a whopping 1/4". This is how I did it.

The tools

DSC02229.jpg

The setup

DSC02230.jpg

Make sure the get the fingers under the bucking magnet

DSC02231.jpg

It takes a couple of hands to pull it off, especially when try to take pics at the same time. The little helper is my seven year old daughter.

DSC02232.jpg

All it takes is getting the puller snug by hand then one turn with the wrench and the magnet pops right off.

DSC02235.jpg

Bye, bye, bucking magnet.

DSC02236.jpg

Looking fit and trim now.

DSC02237.jpg

Here is a little profile action for you all. :)

DSC02239.jpg

Look at me. I'm going to paint my woofer. :P

Meh. :/

Today is the day of no return. I've hacked my door panels and from the looks of it some might assume I used a hatchet. :) Here are some pics of the carnage.

I'll be making a simple pod by stacking some MDF pieces. Sorry no fiberglass work here. :( I'll keep it simple, I think it'll look good. More to come.
