Fi BL15D2 Box Question

Recommended Posts

Robin (iamamp3pimp) was in the process of building me a 2.8^3 @ 35Hz box for my AA Chaos 15D2 when I had to sell the sub due to financial issues. My question is would a Fi BL15D2 run off my AP15001D work in this enclosure? Sub would have cooling, flatwind, and daily options. Looking to get decent lows and numbers out of this box, though sound is more important than numbers to me. Had the CHaos 15 in a similar box before with good results, just bumped up tuning on this new box from 30 to 35Hz trying to get a little better score than the 143.7 at 40Hz I got with the first box. Here is a pic of the first box, new box will be designed the same but built out of raw birch.

Thanks for any input.

Anyone have experience using this sub in an enclosure like this?

I don't have any experience with that sub at all, but I would be concerned about it performing at it's best in that space. Fi's site recommends 3-5 cuft. the .2 cuft difference of 2.8 isn't that much smaller, though I'm not sure if the BL may have more or less displacement than the Chaos. If it has more displacement then the net air space will be even smaller than 2.8, if it has less then it will be even closer to 3cuft. Either way it is just outside of minimum specs. Hopefully someone with better experience can chime in with more info. Besides, unless you were putting 2 or 3x the power to the sub seems like you'd be looking for a larger enclosure for #'s anyway unless I'm thinking bass ackwards again.

Thanks for your input Alton.

From Fi's BL Tech Page:

BL 15 – Ported box we recommend using 2.8-4 cubic feet @ 28-37Hz. Again use 12-16 square inches of vent area per cubic foot of volume.

2.8 is the smallest recomended enclosure. I think with 500 xtra watts rms it shouldn't make that much of a difference correct? Wouldn't the smaller airspace help control the cone?

BL15:

Displacement: 0.21cuft

Chaos15:

Driver Displacement 0.17 CF

.04 difference shouldn't be a problem right?

I got the 3-5 right from the website in the BL woofer's listing, seems we need to see if one of the Fi guys can verify which is more correct. Otherwise, yes the smaller air space can help to control the cone, although even with only .04 difference the tuning will be slightly higher, though it's likely it will not even be noticeable. IMO if I had the money I'd try it, the worst that could happen is that it simply doesn't perform as well as you would have preferred and in that case you could sell the BL and get something else or try another enclosure.

This is pretty much how I feel, just wanted to bounce the idea off someone else to make sure I wasn't completely off base. This box will be a temporary build anyways, my goal is to have a 4th order for the BL built into the trunk and ported thru my rear dash. So, I guess it's a win win situation. If I don't like the way the 2.8 box sounds it will just motivate me to get my 4th order built faster. Thanks bro.

Sounds like you got it figured out, looking forward to the build log on that 4th order.

Yea me too, lol. The 4th order should be pretty sick when it goes down. iamamp3pimp will be building it naturally, dude is the only guy I trust to build my boxes.

Thanks for your help.
