Project I'm Working On

Recommended Posts

So... the SA-8 is pretty badass... but I want something louder.

Starting on this project :

NEO8_1.JPG

NEO8_2.JPG

Yep... a Neo 8 with a 3" coil and 22mm linear one-way excursion (that is XBL^2 that you see) and x-mech of 27mm on the frame I'll be utilizing. Will handle around 1000-watts RMS without much trouble thermally and mechanically. Tooling new spiders and cones just for this driver.

Going to see how it turns out... but simulation predicts motor force more than 300% higher than the SA-8 if all turns out according to plan.

I am designing it for myself primarily as I want to do 157s with four 8s... but I think others will enjoy them too =) Pricing will be a bit higher than an NS v.2 due to the Neo -- but it is a very unique driver that will be worth it to some folks.

Oh yah... the motor will bolt to standard 12 and 4-spokes as well so I can build these as 10s, 12s, 15s, and 18s as well.

Motor is a pretty small diameter (~6.3") so will also make a fantastic Street SPL woofer as it won't occupy a ton of room in the enclosure.

NO ETA for production or prototype just yet due to the new cone and spider toolings... but I will update this thread as things come along !

To think i wanted to get some SA-8s, but now i think i will be waiting for what comes next with these...I think your mind never stops Jacob..you are always coming up with something to make your company strong and successful.. keep up the great work..

aww NEO finally!! lol!!

if you are doing neo motors in the 8's the 15's can't be far behind! lol!!

OOh, i see a copper ring to lower inductance.. sweeet :D

Yes you do :)

---

The coil is pretty short @ 25mm long due to XBL^2 topology -- which is why "only" a 1000-watt RMS rating.

I am trying to see if I can squeeze a "mini Monster coil" in there... aka: 12-layer flat aluminum. If I can do that I think running a 2500-watt amp on one thermally would be possible... I ran a 4500 @ 0.5 daily on the Monster and for bass-race runs (149.9 from one 15) no issue... and it's coil was only 42mm long.

The "stock" coil is 8-layer round copper... pretty beastly coil for the length.

I'm just thinking out loud here, but an induction ring on a spl sub? Would the cost of the ring itself and the machining cost of a two piece top plate assembly offset the benefit for spl? Don't get me wrong it's nice to have, but for spl?

Yes, for SPL. More usable power from the amp = good :)

Z v.2 and NS v.2 both have shorting rings.

Cooling purposes? If so wouldn't you want to ditch the pole vent? Just curious. Thanks.

I suppose the rings can soak up some heat... but they are there to lower inductance which reducing impedance rise which therefore allows the amp to send more power to the speaker.

As for the pole vent... don't want to lose it in any of my cooling designs. There is more going on than just a pole vent -- the vent is just part of the cooling equation.

Cone / Surround are going to be pretty awesome if the concept I'm working on goes well... extremely light but strong enough to stand on. Need to drop some mass in soft parts as the coil is HEAVY.

WoW! That's beefy!! :fing34:

lol, you won't think so when you see it. Especially bolted to an 18" basket. Of course, motor size really means nothing over all.

What are you talking about ;) Motor size automatically coincides with penis size ;D

So these will handle 1000 watts and from sized 10-18's?

What will you be able to burp them at?

WIll you let me test them? :D

Would love to see you fit a monster coil in there :P

It's too early for me to say what it can and cannot do for certain -- going on simulations and experience with other prototypes at the moment -- we'll just have to see :)
