Got my drawing of the cone I'm planning to use... it's quite unique too -- 15 grams weight and I don't see anything short of 180 dB breaking it *laughs* (this type of cone may end up finding it's way onto some of our other subs later) Surround has linear throw up until 2 mm from the basket running out of clearance... motor is linear up until 5 mm from that point. The spider will be just as linear as the surround.

So the overall design is linear up until right before things start crashing together :)

OMG Jacob, I can't wait to see what the end result will be like. (assuming everything in the prototype testing works out to your goals) Everyone thinks the SA-8's are badass, these sound like the beat all/end all of the small subwoofer market. Good luck!!

It's about time you released your plans about these ;)

I may have to demo some.

Some cone renderings :

I'm not going to give away what is interesting about the cone -- I'm sure someone will spot it :)

Nice models. Solidworks? I use Pro-Engineer. Need tool path for CNC? Let me know.

The face of the cone is flat but that isn't what is so different about the cone :)

well.. flat cone would = less cone mass.

hmm..

Omg, teh cone is white :o

You do know Yellow adds SPL? XD

I think it's the part behind the cone that makes it strong, the curves.(correct me if i'm wrong.)

... do you see any hollow areas in the cone assembly ? :)

There aren't any except where the coil goes into the assembly... it's a solid assembly not a traditional "thin" material cone with dust cap.

No, i don't really see it, but i believe in you Grasshopper. :P

Or maybe i don't really understand you . :peepwall:

How about this... the cone is SOLID -- nearly 2" thick of solid material. It's not just a flat cover on a normal cone assembly.

Solid cone, 2 inch thick and you get 15 grams out of it.

wow , i'm impressed.

(woops i'm spamming this thread a little bit :o)

Yep! 22 grams with the front cover assembly (metallic looking part on front)-- funny that the cover weighs about 50% of the rest of the assembly *laughs*

OOh, i see a copper ring to lower inductance.. sweeet :D

The coil is pretty short @ 25mm long due to XBL^2 topology -- which is why "only" a 1000-watt RMS rating.

I am trying to see if I can squeeze a "mini Monster coil" in there... aka: 12-layer flat aluminum. If I can do that I think running a 2500-watt amp on one thermally would be possible... I ran a 4500 @ 0.5 daily on the Monster and for bass-race runs (149.9 from one 15) no issue... and it's coil was only 42mm long.

The "stock" coil is 8-layer round copper... pretty beastly coil for the length.

Oh yah... the 12-layer coil was drawn out and WILL fit this gap... so I will be testing it both ways (8-layer copper vs. 12-layer aluminum).

I am quite excited about it... if everything works as well as it looks on paper it should be awesome.

I'll test a 12" layer for you :D

For me having a truck and forced to fit subs under my seat, small is best. I can save up if its too expensive. I can't magically make more space. Ill pay the price!!
