need some help choosing sub size

Recommended Posts

im having some trouble making a decision on what size btl i wanna get. i have a 2000 4 door chevy blazer and i wanna try to keep the box height under the back of my seat. it will be ported. i cant make up my mind between 3 of the 12's, 2 15's or 1 18. if i do the 3 12's i can give them about 2.5 cubes a piece after displacement. the 15's would be a bit of a squeeze. the 18 i think would be fine in about 7-8 cubes. i cant decide what i want. im looking for something that i can beat on daily but i still want them to be able to get LOUD cause i do compete at local meca shows. any input would help also if you have some recommendations for other subs for around the same price range plz let me know. thanks! sorry forgot to mention i will be running a saz3500d for daily and 2 of the beasts for comps ;)

if you're going for output i think the 15s have the potential to get loudest with their cone area, but if they are suffocated that wont help anything. just pick what will fit best for your application.

Welcome to SSA.

I agree with watts09, put whichever you can fit with proper volume. 3 12's may have more motor force then 2 15's just another thing to consider

i would be able to give the 15s about 3.5 cubes a piece. i was thinking though, what if i extended the top half of the box over the top of the wheel wells. that would have to be an extra 1.5-2 cubes easy per side. would that change the tuning of the box or better yet, would that even make and difference?

That would give you a lot more room to play with. What subs are you looking at? Knowing the sub can help figure out what volume requirements they need.

i was gonna work with the fi btls. do you think if i added that extra space to the box that it would make it harder to tune or would there be any difference over have a regular square or rectangle shaped box?

I know in Jay-C76's build link his box sure isn't rectangular :P

So I would say that yes you can do it and shouldn't have a problem, but i'm not sure how it would affect tuning. I'm guessing it doesn't change.

Ahh ahh ahh (2) SMD 15" will smash on 3 12's when it comes to motor force.

yeah i was pretty set on the btls. ive heard the smds were like 800+ doll hairs per sub lol thats crazy. im actually thinking about some xcons now. how do you guys think the xcons stack up against the btls? ive heard they dont hit the lows very well. by the way thanks for being so helpful. i was on some other forum, not gonna say any names, and ask this same question and all i got was" buy 1 of all three sizes and let us know". anyways i really appreciate the help

The BTL's and XCONS are made for different purposes.

if your talking about the 3.5 for the btl 15s, it would be after sub and port displacement. also i just noticed that the xcons were a sq type sub lol but thanks for pointing that out

ok so i talked to my buddy about my setup and he said i need 3 "beefy" 12's. i figure the btls fall right into that category.im just wondering though, what are some other "beefy" subs that i should be considering. i like the nightshades but they are out of my price range at 500 a sub. does anyone have any input on some other brands that i could use?
