What to do to make a box look like this...

Recommended Posts

I recently found this box picture:

I love how the port and the edges are rounded. I'm guessing that on the edges that they achieved that with a lot of sanding. I'm wondering how to shape the port like that. I'm considering remaking my box, to try to achieve something like this. It looks completely badass.

Kerf cuts, like making a bunch of cuts and bending the wood? I'm wondering how you would make the angles at the corners of the port. I'm thinking this might be a little above my carpentry expertise, haha. I might get some quotes from some box builders, but I'm sure for something as big as I've got it would be big money, especially for shipping. I wish I could find somebody local that could do it.

Those are Kerfed ports to achieve good tuning you need to be good at math because there are no free calcs for this...

They are pretty hard to do and when done you have to apply fiberglass resin in the corners so it wont move...

Kerf cuts and some complex miter cuts.....

Not a first time try kinda thing.

It's an art that really takes practice to perfect, especially a quad flare.

I don't see how it could move if its all glued and screwed. Could you elaborate?

The resin goes on the back side to fill the voids created by cutting the kerfs.

Like by cutting the pieces at angles and then sanding?

No, just rounding them with a router.

I can get a 2" radius with kerfs.

I can do a smaller radius but there's a point where you can remove too much material when you do the kerfs.

I'm sure that enclosure has had tons of body filler to get that smooth look.

Plus One hell of a skin of paint!

I almost borrowed a router and routed a square recess around the port and glued some molding in the recess.

Like this
