to train a puppy.

Recommended Posts

my mom bought a puppy for me.. and when she called to tell me i was like NO NO NO!... but when she showed up i was like aww yes,. yes ,. yes....

so i got a 7 week old puppy... now 9 weeks today... its a bulldog and bullmastiff mix.....

i have been able to teach her things pretty fast.. at the age of 8 weeks she learned to sit, and lay, she knows she must sit calmly before i will put food in the bowl.. at 9 weeks she has learned how to play tug of war, fetch, and i have leash broke her...

she is giving me alot of trouble on potty training tho.. i have training pads down.. and the first week she was using them well.. but now she will only pee on them.. and once she pees on it 2 times.. she will not pee on it any longer.. then she will go on the floor.. and she always poops on the floor..

when she pees and poops on the floor, i was putting her face close to it.. spanking then takeing outside to the grass... but that was not working.. so i started facing pankin and caging... and well that wasent working either...

so yesterday i started treating for outside restroom use. i hope this works.. she loves treats but only gets them for going outside..

anyway im open to thoughts and advice FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL AT TRAINING......

nothing i hate more then a person with no kids telling somone with kids how to be a parent.

all these are pics of her at 7 weeks.. ill update some new ones later today... she is growing VERY FAST.. with the head of a beast

It takes a while for potty training to stick, especially if the pup is stubborn as a mule. Keep at it though and it will stick. Took about 3 months for our newest one but it finally stuck. As long as you're diligent about rewarding good behavior and disciplining bad, and you'll do just fine from my experience.

don't yell at her if she does something wrong. definitely don't hit her. star was one and still not potty trained when i got her because she was an outside (fuckers tied her to the side of a barn 24/7) dog and all i did was give positive reinforcement for everything, including the accidents in the house. kept her in a cage when i was gone. if you have a cage and you're gonna do that don't use puppy pads because anything that smells like them gets pissed on after that. just use newspaper.

when she goes potty outside give her some treats and some lovin. if she accidentally goes inside say no without raising your voice and point at the spot then put her outside for a few minutes. she will get the hint pretty quick. don't get angry!! well try and not get angry

she's a pretty dog :)

agree with cranberry no on potty pads and say no when they do it inside and take them out

also another thing if you have time you can watch the dog and you can tell when she/he has to go and when you see this take them out.. such as wandering and sniffing is what mine did when she had to go

If your 8 week old puppy sh!t on the floor then you notice and put her face by it she doesnt know why you are doing that. You have to catch them in the act.

I have now a 7 month old boxer/pit bull puppy and he was trained at 10 weeks. If you want to train her you want to keep a constant eye out for a while and catch them in the act.

Where do you put here when you are at work?

Do you have a doggy door?

When I went to work I would put him in the bathroom with pads and they worked great. It tought him where to go potty. When I was home I was watching constantly, he went in the house about a total of 6 times. You need to catch them in the act. I could always tell when he needed to go by his sniffing or weird patterns of how he was acting. As soon as I saw this I would take him outside and keep saying go potty. This was during Winter so it wasnt fun haha. After a week of this he would go to the door and sit, it was great. I would take him out and give him a treat.

After a while we had a doggy door put in and tought him he could go in and out. We moved him up, we blocked the downstairs off and sure enough he went outside! After a week of this we took the gate down and now he the whole house. Never had a problem since.

no don't shove her nose in it.. point and say no then put her outside. definitely more effective if you catch her doing it but you can't always do that you know?

X2 don't put the nose in it, that will teach them to HIDE it if they go in the house, they cannot reason like humans can so they think going potty in that spot was bad, so they will move the spot to a low traffic area.

X2 on the sweater puppies as well :D

Don't react negativly to bad behavior or potty in the house. Always reward good behavior. And encourage her to potty outside. Do you have a puppy door?

I find kennel training the most use full. They won't go where they sleep. Then everytime you get home you let the pup out and have a treat ready and then go nuts with the love when they go outside.

Kennel trained all my dogs over the years. Just develop a schedule and stick to it.

Yea definately kennel train. Just let her out often and if she happens to do something outside reward her. If your gone leave her in the kennel. Thats what i did with my great dane and he is perfect in the house besides clearing off tables with his tale. As others have said though just reward good behavior.
