finish nails or screws?

Recommended Posts

im about to be building a pretty big box that will be housing some serious drivers. i wanted to know which one would be the best option, nails or screws? ive always finished nailed all my boxes together but i also put liquid nail on everyone of them. the walls of this sub box will be 1.5" thick. so would it be best to screw them together? i just hate how long it takes to screw it all, thats why i prefer nails

I'd use screws.

#6 1 5/8 inch drywall screws is what I use. Just be careful because if you use them too close to the edge of a cut the mdf will want to split.

Predrilling will help with splitting, i recommended predrilling Every hole you're going to drill.

Nails (long nails, atleast 2.5 inch long.), and wood glue would work good.

The screws only hold the box together till the glue dries.

Yeah, the predrilling really helps. I'd definitely do it.

You guys aren't getting the point of securing the panels for an enclosure, the glue is the strongest point of the enclosure, wherever glue soaks into the wood is MUCH stronger than just MDF. Try breaking an enclosure joint sometime, if you built it correctly you will have a very hard time breaking it right where the glue joint is, normally it will break at the point the glue stopped soaking into the MDF. Finish screws work just fine, anything you have as long as you use it correctly will work.
