What batteries to go for?

Recommended Posts

yes another one of those threads...

I know which batteries are better then others. But when you look at what you get for a certain amount of money, then it gets hard to choose. This is for a comp/daily setup, not only burps.

I have: Hifonics Colossus II (3000W rms), SS Ref4.920 (600W rms), Two Fi Q 18" and a HO alternator from Iraggi rated at 250A.

These batteries will be in the back.

2 x Kinetik KR3112, same as HC2400 just the racing line (the red batteries).

2 x XS power D3400

2 x Odyssey PC1700

2 x Xstatic Batcap 2000

The battery upfront will also be replaced by a new battery from the same producer as the batteries I choose to have in the back. The reason for my doubt, is that with the Kinetik batteries I get a whopping 260Ah, and even if it's not important for the DB's, it's still nice to have a nice reserve, compared to Xstatics which I get only 100Ah...

What would you go for and why?

Get whichever you can afford. They're almost all quality batteries.

I personally prefer XS Power.

I have used the HC2400 (2) the batcap 2000(2) and a buddy of mine uses the odyssey 2150 (2)

if you pick batcap 2000's keep in mind these are burping batteries as thier reserve is very small. when i had my 2-batcap 2000's and a h/o i had no issue supporting a 2krms setup for daily use but keep in mind these are intended for burping.

the hc2400-2 i didn't care for them b/c they were old and didn't hold a charge very well..

the odyssey 2150's in my buddies truck supporting his 4krms setup are amazing! but expensive

on this site the d3400 are all the rage and everyone loves them

currently right now i use a pair of NSB90's and they are tanks and only cost 260CAD each and i like how they proform and hold the voltage even doing a burp they work well!!

when comparing AH almost compare the size and lb of the batteries the batcap's are like 7x7x7 and like 30lb's on the other hand the hc2400 are like doulbe the size and like 70lb's lol.

to give you an answer i would either pick the batcaps for size and wieght (they held up fine for my 2krms setup) or odyssey for reliability and proformance (based off of the 2150's and what is seen) i am not a fan of the kinetik b/c i had a bad experience with them! as for XS i don't have any experience with them jsut what ppl tell me!

also for dialy AH isn't as important as cca b/c you have your alt to back it up and keep in mind to support that amp you might need around 100-120ah depending on the fusing.

so enjoy your car audio and if you are in it for the fun don't kill your bank!! lol!

I look at it like this the car is going to need 20-40 amps of the 250 to run the car so you are basically running 210 amps for a 3800 watt system. There is not a battery made that can charge as fast as it discharges so if and when you are pulling more from the alternator than it puts out you can be drawing 100+ amps from your batteries at any given time (more with the engine off). To a lower capacity battery those 100+ amps mean more to its state of charge than it does to the larger capacity batteries. Smaller capacity might recharge from 50% DOD faster than a larger capacity battery discharged to 50% DOD but it is going to take longer to get to 50% DOD on the larger battery so you would be cycling the smaller batteries more which would effect lifespan. Also you want to make sure the batteries do not get overcharged (seen it with every battery listed) and you want to make sure they never reach the state of being undercharged for a long period while . Last I checked no battery company warranties for those conditions. I would get a charger that does AGM charging like a ctek us7002 or hard wire install a KIPS 60 or KIPS 80 that will charge up your rear batteries more fully than what your alt would. Doing so and monitoring the the voltage will help you in finding a potiential issue before it becomes a problem and will keep your batteries lasting longer and perform better in the long run.

They are all within the same price range, $50+/-.

Audiolife thanks for the tip, and I have thought of that already. The car will be charged with a Ctek XS 25000 (25A) every night, this is a smart AGM charger. And I reckon that I will not be running at full power all the time, so I should be fine with just a 250A alternator. Even if my system draws about 400A at full volume. This is also a reason I'm watching the Ah rating.

But One thing I found rather strange, is that the 1700 and HC2400 is about the same size and weight, but the 1700 has allmost half the Ah rating of the HC2400. Should one assume that perhaps the HC2400 doesn't have that much Ah?

CrazyKenKid, thanks for the reply. :) Odyssey 2150 is above my price range. I have thought about the NSB's as well, but I can't find a shop with good prices on them, any tips? (US shops)

Ok right now I would be going for two NSB 90 or 125 if I find a shop that sells them at a good price, otherwise I'm going for the XS power batteries.

Ah isn't everything, one could have a capability of a much higher discharge current than the other. Who knows. I havn't even looked at the spec sheet for either so I really can't answer your question.

I'll call and check with them.

There are batteries 13 lbs lighter than the 1700 with 1 less aH on your list.

I would monitor the resting voltage of the batteries closely for the first few weeks, also if you live where it gets snow and you wont be driving the car for a few weeks I would disconnect the batteries from the car and put them on a maintainer/charger inside until you are ready to roll again no matter what you choose.

Since when??

Last couple of years at least. I have read on a couple of forums that they do break down much quicker then Odyssey, XS Power and other brands. Has something to do with the batteries being made of recycled lead. They are still good batteries for the money, but if your budget is large enough for other brands like XS power, Odyssey, Stinger etc then I would advice to buy those brands instead.

Looks like I'll be going for two NSB 125 in the back and a NSB75 under the hood.

Thanks for the replies. :fing34:
