2002 Alero High output alternator help

Recommended Posts

I have a 2.2L 2002 Oldsmobile Alero and am having a tough time finding a high output alternator bigger than 150amps. I'm just wondering if somebody has this car and purchased one, I called a place and they said an alternator made for a 1999-2002 Chevy cavalier MIGHT FIT, so that's a take a chance and hope you're right. I am running 2000 watts right now, my alternator fried today and have been searching for hours trying to find one but nothing comes up. I figure I might as well get one now instead of wasting $100 to get a new 105amp one. Otherwise would a second battery work after the big 3 upgrade? I have 2 1000 watt alpines and 2 pioneer premiers ts-w3004spl but will be getting 2 15" Fi BL's as soon as pioneers are sold, also have an upgraded battery already.

-Also have searched forum for answers but not are100% clear for my setup-

first of all welcome to the forum! lol!!

now your setup you says is 2k setup is this in watt or rms? if you are unsure please share a link to your amps!

also WHAT is your starting and or SECONDARY battery>? if multiple please name them all and do you have a voltmeter to monitor the voltage going to the amps?

also for the big 3 do you have ANY of this done yet?

Thanks I decided to make a first post lol. In order:

2000 watts RMS cea2006 certified so no bullshit lol.

My only battery is a yellowtop something, I just rememember it was the best they had at pep boys in stock so unsure of the brand anymore. It was $230 if that helps lol.

Also no i haven't done any big 3 yet because the wiring got stolen..

Someone stole your wiring? The big three is adding a battery ground to the chassis and one to the engine then adding another wire from your alt to the battery positive all in 1/0 awg wire.

umm the optimum yelllow top! this one right?

Amazon.com: Optima Batteries OPT-9014045 Yellow Top Deep Cycle Spiral Cell Battery: Automotive

but which one?

Optima YellowTop Specs - Yellow Cap Batteries by Optima

at any rate you will need more AH to suport a 2krms setup! maybe around 100ah! so maybe picking up another yellow top would be ideal for your setup and also help out a TON!

if you can i woudl recommend putting both of them in the trunk!

BUT BUT before that i recommend buying some new 1/0 awg and doing the big 3 asap and get a votl meter and mabye then you can avoid another battery and or a h/o!

for my last setup i had 2-batcap 2000 (50ah each) no h/o and the big3 done! and it ran flawlessly!! with a pos starting battery! hell i cant' even fit a batcap 2000 under the hood(7x7x5~)

at any rate i only got a h/o alt b/c my last alt was nearly 5 years old and it was time for a freshen up so i got it refreshened up and also got it upgraded to h/o aka new heat sink, recitifer and some other new improvmetns to it! and now it is 250 amp at 2500krmp or 200amp at 1.5krpm! around that area of specs!

but it will for sure come in handly with the next setup!!!!

and is this your poioneer amp?

as in I had it in my garage uninstalled and it was stolen from my garage, I know what the big 3 is.

Yes that is my amp the good ol' mrp-m1000 and I have 2 of them with a capacitor, yes I have a 30 farad capacitor as a voltage meter and looks. I know it basically does nothing without any other upgrades but hey it looks cool.

Also my battery is the D34/78 the first one on that list!

A friend actually did this, it was spendy, not as much as a brand new h/o! But only upgraded a little bit but maybe I will just do the big 3 add a second battery and do that. I plan on getting bigger amps eventually down the road but maybe I'll have a new car/suv by then with more cargo room lol.

having someone re wound a stock alt. is really risky...it can be done properly or it can actually be worse than your stock alt. at idle. I would rather just purchase one of the best HO alts because i really dont want to go back and have to spend more money in the long run

Will have to do thanks. So the big 3 and another battery would work fine then?

Wont be able to answer that question until we know how many amps your alternator puts out

i recommend the big 3 and a volt meter for starters and put the volt meter on your dash so you can constandly monitor the voltage if you CONSTANDLY dip into 12.8 or less then another battery would be ideal but BUT if you keep over 12.8 secondary battery isn't needed!

in this day and age save money where you can! also what are your listening habbits? slam the music ALL the time? only when cruising on the freeway? while in your drive way with a girl in the back and the car audio at max? lol!
