Battery/Alternator Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Ok guys I'm looking for some advice towards the two topics as stated in the title. I'm running a sundown Sae-1200d and an FI bl 18". Currently stock alt , stock batt, all 1/0 ga wire and batt neg to chassis ground in 1/0. I'm initially looking to put a new battery up front or (possibly in the back) but the new batt would be running of the stock alt for while whether it be in the trunk with the stock batt up front or the new batt up front solo. I'm looking to save some $ up and get a new ho alternator in later on. Right now I'm looking at the kinetik hc1800 which does 1150 cca and fits my budget of being under $250. This battery will also fit up front under my hood as well. I've already done 1/3 of the big 3 so just swapping out batteries wouldn't be a problem there, then i''m looking to finish the big 3 obviously. So i'd like to get your guys opinions and advice on that. Also I'm looking for a ho alt for a 2008 ford escape 2.3l 4 cyl as well under $500 if possible, i've not been able to find any for my car. I'm preferably looking for a cheap price and good performance if possible... thanks guys for the help I appreciate it.

Nick

to tell you the truth..i would suggest getting the Kinetik 1800 and finishing up the big three and also purchase a volt meter and go from there...personally i would wait on the new alt.

isnt performance>price? why would you buy something with low performance? lol

x2 on the starter bat. and the volt meter. should be good, just have to get them and see what needs to be done from there.

i wouldn't get the kinitek but other would bag to differ lol! i wouldn't get it due to a rumor (potential fact) of if charged over 14.4volts they deteriate at much more aggressive rate, and thsi is supposively more common the newer kinetik. is it true most likey not but chargin any agm battery over 14.4 is bad so who knows!

at any rate if money is key for you i would recommend buying a volt meter (say 30$ at best) and finishing the big 3 (alt to battery the positive run) and go from there! and if you insist to put the new battery in the front that will be fine.

i prefer to put batteries as close to the amp as possible though.

and you never know once you get the big 3 finished up and the kinetik in the rear you may not need a h/o!! look at it like this 1200rms at 12 voltts = 100amps of potential current draw at any given time? so if your stock alt is at least 100amps and you have a new battery you shoudl be good! lol!!

You don't need a HO alt with just that little of power unless your alt now is going to shit and you are thinking of upgrading power later.

Over 5 year old Kinetik HC 1400 under the hood

med_gallery_716_304_6669.jpg

Voltage at battery from the alternator after 10+ minutes after start up while getting ready to check transmission fluid.

It has been this way since I installed it over 5 years ago and over 50k miles. "New" Kinetiks are made the same way mine was as well there was no magic change over or lower quality parts.

2 most common ways to kill a battery are undercharging and continued use as the battery is continued to be left undercharged. Can be a very slow process. The second way is to overcharge a battery which becomes rather obvious when you start hearing valves pop, smell rotten eggs and then end up with a swollen battery. Every battery is susceptible to these factors and many 12 v AGM batteries come with a little note that says * do not charge at over 14.4 volts* . It is a very common and is not a "bad thing" especially if you are concerned with lifespan.
