Looking for a larger sub to replace my two 10's

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, as the title says I'm looking for a single larger sub to replace my two infinity reference series 1050W's but still provide the same amount or better performance. This is to save space in the back of my cherokee without sacrificing loudness or quality. I am running a infinity 611a sub amp and I would like the sub to match up well with it, it puts out 657 watts rms at 2 ohms. Being a student funds are a little limited but I was looking at the Sundown SA-12. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Edit*

The Infinity's are in a sealed box dimensions 25.5 x 10 x 12, I Would prefer the box to not come above the back seats which is about 18", I could always have the sub facing up if the depth is shorter than the height but I'm willing to make exceptions. My biggest problem is with the length of the box because I don't want to put stuff in front of the subs I have a lot of useless space. so maybe 18 x 15 x 18, my budget is about 200 but I'm willing to put down a bit more for quality

are the infinity's currently sealed or ported? How big is the box you currsntly have? How much space are you willing to give up? And your budget, around 190?

it would be nice if you could post your goals and give a more concise idea of what space u have available as well as a budget.

a single 12 like the sa 12 would be a good sub. sounds like your looking for output? i think your looking in the right direction (with the the SA). order a dual 4ohm sub to wire @ 2ohm at the amp for full power. there are other subs out there aswell. check out the ssa store. link is at the top of your screen.

Sorry been fighting a sickness and ideas don't come out as clearly as I'd wish they would. so here I go again.

budget is 200-250

goals: SQ but edging more to the louder side

space available: 18 x 18 x 18 (smaller is better)

As for subs the SA-12 was the first to catch my eye but I've also been looking at IA's lethal injection series 12" and 15"

well the 15 would have to be sealed so the biggest your looking is a 12 or maybe 2 tens/2 8s etc. (ported box is a must for output imo)

SQ and loud dont really belong in the same sentence, i think you mean your looking for a loud sub that doesn't sound like ass, more or less?

in that area id think you should look into fi ssd (not sure what options you should use). maybe stretch out and get an icon in the $275 range. maybe a pair of dcon 10s (if they could fit ported), aswell as those you've mentioned.

I'm pretty happy with my RE SX15 ported. It has great output and decent sound. An RE SX12 ported in about 2 cu ft tuned to 34 would be a nice setup. And since they came out with the new SXX replacement the SX's are a little cheaper.

Is there really no balance between the 2? Am I just on some misguided quest? But enough about that lol.

I want to be able to listen to a variety of music, which I'm guessing is a SQ build. The subs I currently have sound decent across all types of music but sometimes I feel it lacks a little in the output department when I listen to bass heavy music (rap, techno). Is it too much to ask for a single larger sub that still sounds good with a little more output than I get with my two 10's?

port the tens u have now they should get way louder ported and u can save your cash up into u can get bigger amp and sub

Keeping it sealed will preserve SQ which is what I now know that I want. Would a sealed 15" fit my bill? Like the IA's 15" lethal injection is only $209 and would work with my budget well.

Your confusion is with the term SQ if you were looking for true SQ than you wouldn't be worried about more sub output. You just want a system that sounds good on different types of music. correct?

I think so to, guess I don't grasp the definitions of SQ and SPL as well as others who have experienced them. Sorry.

I guess just felt that what Lithium said about loud subs that don't sound like ass was a little to sided towards output. But now that I look at it, I do want a loud sub that will sound good across all types of music. If that is at all possible.

So how would the IA Lethal Injection 15" in a sealed 1.5-2 cu.ft box be for what I want? which is a loud sub that still sounds good across all types of music

look man, your getting played by an OLD MYTH! in car audio that ported boxes sound like ass and sealed boxes are better for sound quality. this is more or less complete bullshit. a well built ported box, by well built i mean to proper specs, will still sound good and give u way more output. your probably wondering why ppl use sealed boxes at this point, those that use sealed are either after a difference response curve from their sub, or have a space requirement. (in some cases a sub is really only suppose to be used in a sealed or ported box, for example the fi bl is recommended for only ported boxes... this is because of the woofers design)

have you looked into the FI ssd's or Q's? They are around your price range and even though the Q is more geared toward sq. it will still get loud.

Up your budget and get a 15" XCON sealed. They will POUND in a sealed box and the SQ is amazing.

You will not regret it.

Thanks for the lesson in car audio Lithium, always willing to learn when the opportunity arises. One of my goals was to have a smaller or at least shorter box than the 2 tens.

I have looked at the FI subs but they seemed to require more RMS than my amp puts out, also I would LOVE to get a xcon and better amp but sadly I need to budget my money for other projects. :(

your on a roll with these myths my friend, NO such thing as underpowering a sub. you dont need to run rated power ever. theres plenty of great subs out there. sadly i havent played with nearly any myself :(

he could save some money and do a 12 xcon ported maybe?

wait his budget is 200-250.... maybe an Icon or a pair of dcons from ssa would fit the budget better.

Speakers are stupid, they do what they're told. It will play whatever notes you throw at it no matter how much power is going to it, it doesn't care it just wants to play :)

so there's no disadvantage to having an amp with a lower RMS than the sub? I thought it might not perform as well with less power.

Like if you were to compare a little import car to a Ferrari but you only had a 200 hp engine, the import wouldn't be terribly fast but it would be zippy and kinda fun but if you put that engine into the Ferrari you'd just be able to get around.

But if I'm wrong, what are the disadvantages?

How would the 15" xcon compare to the 15" Li driven by my 657 rms amp? Any rough ideas?

Of course it wont perfom as well (not in a bad way), you will still have some thermal handling and mechanical handling left in the sub which can be a good thing (an advantage in case you ever want to upgrade). There are no disadvantages of running less than the subs rms to the sub, only if your trying to make your amp put out more power then it can and you start sending dirty signals to the sub.

I just put a Sundown Z v.1 15" sub on the same Infinity amp you have (a 1000 watt rms sub) and it freaking pounds like no other, wishing I would of keep the sub for myself. Just a heads up that there is no such think as underpowering, you could always just make your box a little bigger than recommended if you have the room to take up for the low amount of power being used (just another option).

The Lethal Injection is a great woofer. I have 2 15" and they are very loud and have great sq imo. The are able to go in sealed and ported enclosure's. I would recommend ported as they will have great output while retaining great sq.

oh thats great lol, things seemed simpler when I thought I needed to stick to RMS ratings. No idea what I want to do now
