RE MT 12 recone problem

Recommended Posts

I was recently asked to do a recone on an mt 12. No problem, got the old softparts out and when I put the new softparts, the surround doesn't touch the landing on the basket. The spider is seated nicely, yet the surround needs to go down almost 1/2".

The new softparts on the motor :

The recone was bought from the local RE dealer and he also is confused by the spider / surround spacing.

I don't think pressing the surround down is a good idea because it will limit up-travel.

What are my options now ? Except for getting another recone....

What is the actual problem causing the difference? From glancing at the side-by-side it looks like the spiders on the new are attached to the former lower than the originals, but that would affect where the voice coil centers in the gap and if the cone and surround are attached in the same manor then the spacing there would be the same (and it could also just be the angle/etc). Is the surround properly seated on the cone?

Without knowing what was causing the difference I wouldn't be able to suggest a remedy, as if something is misaligned it could seriously affect performance (and longevity) even if you were able to somehow get it to "fit".

I'd suggest either saying screw it and get a new recone, or take some measurements of the two and figure out where they are off.

Finally had some time to do the measurements.

I measured from the bottom of the former to the spider - former joint, to the spider mounting surface and to the surround mounting surface. All measurements in inches.

Drawing is here, easier to understand than some random numbers :)

Seems like on the new one the spider sits lower and the cone sits higher but the spider is very saggy on the old one. Should I go forward with the recone or stop and ask for a new one ?

bumpy :P

I'm thinking about gluing the spider and then pressing the cone untill the surround surface is where it needs to be. Yay ? Nay ? Or new recone ?

Well, talked to the dealer and he's coming to pick up the sub tomorrow. I'll lay out the details for him and letting the sub as it is now, don't want to glue it and get blamed if it fails because of the spacing problem.
